Stamps/Stencils for diff. part marking - 10/01/13 08:45 PM
When it comes to marking the rear carrier housing all alpha or alpha numeric characters I have seen look stamped. Does anyone make a large character (7/8) stamp with a good font that is adjustable that would work for this application?

If you want it exact take a pic, clean it up with a photoshop if needed... Then take the pic to a stamp/stencil shop and they'll make a stamp of the pic you've submitted... I do this and it's relatively cheap...

Clean the housing and use tracing paper. Then transfer to heavier paper, cut out and spray! Thats' what I did with my transmission.

Feb 16th assy date of the rear axle assy. My SPD is 2/26. The stamp was probably adustable and would have to have 4 digits to cover all month and day variations. The 'X' may simply be a place holder or could have significance beyond that.

Other photos posted here have shown these stencils:
Housing, "9-14U". Pig, "9-14".
Housing, "5-12Z". Pig, ?
Housing, "2-16X". Pig, ? SPD 2/26.
Housing, "...1L". Pig, "10-23". Hamtramck. SPD 11/8/68.
If anyone else can contribute to this list, please do.

Updating the list.
Housing, "9-14U". Pig, "9-14".
Housing, "5-12Z". Pig, ?
Housing, "2-16X". Pig, ? SPD 2/26.
Housing, "...1L". Pig, "10-23". Hamtramck. SPD 11/8/68.
Housing, "101G". Pig, ?
Housing, "J128". Pig, ?
Housing, "19U". Pig, ?
I think there is a correlation between the housing date and the pig date. Maybe same date or close.
Most stencils have more paint at the edges of the characters than the middle. Wonder what causes that?

Based on the appearance of these stamps it appears they were some sort of soft stamp material, likely rubber, not "stencils". Rubber stamps "squish" when you press them, often pushing the paint to the outsides and leaving the center thin or nearly void of paint, It all depends on the pressure applied when adding them. MOST stampings that are added back by restorers are too perfect because of the extra effort making them nice.

My '69 roadrunner had it's orginal housing and 8 3/4. The 8 3/4 sure-grip was dated 4/22. The housing was dated the next day - 4/23.

I finshed an 8.3/4 for a 1969 Charger this spring and the dates were nearly a week apart.
I had a stamp made at rubberstampchamp.com to redo them

Hard to see but there is an F on this 70 challenger rear. Only marking found. Its interesting to note that both this and other rear were marked from same position.

Here's paint daubs and marks on a 1969 Barracuda 8-3/4 axle with 3.23:1, non Sure Grip, made at Hamtramck November 1968.

Assembly date of the carrier only, 10/23/68.

Re: Stamps/Stencils for diff. part marking - 03/17/14 06:43 AM
This paint is rust stained but is actually white. There are bars above and below the 23. The SPD of the car was B08, November 8. The actual build date was several days later, because the car arrived at the Houston dealer on November 27. A good chemical rust remover will leave the paint, so I can keep this original stencil as it is under some RPM wax.

The yellow unit assembly date, L1xxx, is on the bottom of the driver side. The last three numbers of the assembly part number, 565, are seen just above on the front of the housing. The yellow 565 is upside down when the axle is on the car.

The yellow unit assembly date, according to others, is usually the same date as the carrier date or one or two days after. Nobody seems to know what the alpha means. This might be L10 23 or L10 24? Looks like the 1 and L are upside down to each other?

Re: Stamps/Stencils for diff. part marking - 03/17/14 07:40 AM
Here's the upside down yellow assembly number 565 with the driver side spring perch below right. This is the same number on my broadcast sheet under AXLE. AFAIK the only places you can get this part number are from the axle, from the build sheet, or copy somebody else's car that has the exact same axle (year, size, ratio, w or w/o Sure Grip, brakes) in the same kind of car with the same engine and transmission. Note there is more paint at the edges of the numbers. There is an intentional or unintentional bar under a 5.

These photos don't show it, but there was spray paint overspray inside the housing.

Almost gone, but here's another round yellow paint daub of the same size at the front of the passenger side spring perch. Couldn't find one on the driver side.

My yellow A was done by a pro and looks better than yours. The A is right side up when installed. A white paint stick X is above.

Here's the white X above the A. This mark was made with a paint stick, not a lumber crayon.

One sloppy blue paint daub on the underside of the pig apparently made with a 2" wide or so brush. This one blue daub means 3.23 ratio and small stem size, according to the chart. This 3.23 axle is for a 340 4-speed. The big stems must have been for big blocks.

Re: Stamps/Stencils for diff. part marking - 03/17/14 09:22 AM
Last one for this 69 Barracuda 8-3/4, 3.23, non Sure Grip. A scrawled 8 on the pig. There's a small amount of a different shade of blue splashed on the top side of the pig. I'll keep the marks on the pig as they are. The housing will get repainted semi gloss black after the rust pits are filled in, so the housing will get re-daubed.
