All this discussion on FRAM air filters...

I thought that I would post pictures of my original 1970 340 air filter.

Good pictures.
I recently picked up a NOS one, and also bought the current 305 offering from Fram.
Biggest differences that I can tell is the part number is molded into the rubber seal on the original. Also, the little recesses molded in the rubber seal are round on the original, and rectangular on the current offering.

Nice... So are the holes flat or punched with a lip? looks like both. Folded seam is a nice touch.

The reason it looks like both is that what you are seeing is an excellent example of the "burr" that developed when the punch die started to dull. The tooling was then switched from a flat hole punch to a Dimpled punch to raise this "burr" away from the media and avoid the possibility of the burr side (if the band was assembled with the burr side towards the filter media) coming into contact and chafing the filter media. The Dimpled holes then created an unmistakable marking of which side of the band was the outside during the assembly process.

How fast did the die dulling occur? I've seen 100% production line original A12 filters with the flared holes, this was one of the first applications for these filters. I've seen s good number of original 69-71 cars that still had the original filters (survivors) and I've never seen one example with the flat screen holes. Not saying they didn't exist but they seem to be the exception, or rarity, not the rule or norm, accordingly I'd prefer having one with the flares. Can you make that style?

Ed
Did you work for Fram in Providence, Rhode Island.
I was under the impression that the filters were manufactured there for some time and at the sister company in Stratford, Ontario, Canada.
I know for a fact the Stratford facility manufactured the oval filters in the 60's.
Therefore there must have been two sets of tooling, one in Canada, one in the US.
Would that offer any accounting for the flared and non flared or did they wear at the same rate depending on production.

Yes, I was born and raised in RI and that is where I started working with FRAM. Moved to Ohio in the 90's when the Engineering Department was moved to Perrysburg OH.

The prototype and the original production of the Six Pack Filter began in Providence, I built the prototype myself. Eventually the parts came from any one of 4 different plants in the US and Canada. This part was a low production piece, most of the time it was manufactured in East Providence RI or Ontario, But it depended on where the inventory was needed and production line availablity. It was made in Stratford Ontario Canada, Greenville Ohio, or Clearfield UT as well as the Providence location (actually East Providence). So there was tooling in each location. The tooling was not changed all at once in the beginning, but eventually it was all changed to the dimple screen to avoid the burr issue. This fact is the reason there are parts with either/or for a period of time depending on whether the run was made "online" or in an "off-line" batch, and which plant produced the batch.

Hope that answers the question, I need to load up on more coffee to fully wake up so I may tweak the answer once Im fully alert

That makes sense. Coincidentally I worked in the same building in Clearfield Utah for 7 years, it was in the Freeport Center and was owned by Allied Signal (formerly Fram).

I have 3 CA-305's on hand:

Example 1 Mopar Box/Puckered Screen/Fram CA-305 NOT molded into rubber.

Example 2 Fram Box/Puckered Screen/Fram CA-305 molded into rubber.

Example 3 Fram Box/Flat Screen/Fram CA-305 molded into rubber.

Most, but not all, original production filters have NOT had the Fram CA-305 molded in.
