If you really want accurate you'll need to find a survivor with original hood paint and take some dimensions. I've seen a couple and the decal placement varied. The example posted above is a reproduction, it's in the general area of correct but since it's been replaced it shouldn't be used as a reference to correctness. Also, they did not have the orange/red colored "wedge" lettering, originals were all white.

You might want to ask Ryan on this board, I believe his was pretty original before he restored it. He may have the dimensions.

I've been looking at these cars since the early 90s and placement definitely seems to vary, but I think most people put them way too far front.

... then again... People might be placing them so far front based on the original ad. (?)

Re: 71 Duster V24 Hood Decal Placement - 08/04/13 04:44 PM

Thanks!!!

All the photos and impute really help. Think I'm going to go with what looks best when I'm applying the decal. Hard call like the look of Jason's but the orig. hoods seem to placed back and towards center.

Tommy, a couple of the car when I brought it home 16,000 miles lots of original paint but not all, hood was replaced and repainted due to the addition of Twister scoops and holes being cut into hood.

Too much going on right now to get it ready for Purestocks but I hope to be up and running and on the track by the end of the year.

Thanks again for all the replies!

I think I saw that car at the Mopar Nationals YEARS ago, like back in the late 90s. I think I have it on video somewhere, but no pics. I remember, low mileage, black, white stripes, orange interior, V24 and wing. Guy was racing it. I thought it had some kind of wheels though... Like polished Centerlines or Welds or something. Nice car! Love the orange interior! 71 Dusters are still one of my favorite Mopars.

Hi Scott,
was looking through this post and noticed your statement about survivor duster picture above and you completely wrong on it being a reproduction. Not sure why you stated that. This is one of the nicest survivors out there as far as being a v24 71 duster 340 4 speed car.

That was not the first photo posted, it was changed after I posted (to your survivor example). Notice how I mentioned the red "wedge" lettering that your example obviously lacks? I am aware that your example is correct, Ive seen that pic of yours many times here on Moparts, I agree, its correct.

The more you look at these pics the more you realize the V24 should have been part of the Duster 340 package

Beeware that's the first I've heard of your car, very very nice!! If you have any more pics of it please post them. I've only heard of one real 71 black v24 duster before yours and it was the one Allen restored and painted a different color. When I first saw your car I was thinking it was one that was on Jacks Auto catalog and the orange decals were changed over to white but then I quickly remember that one had a vinyl top and it was not a real v24 car.
Black is by far my favorite on 71 duster v24 cars

Re: 71 Duster V24 Hood Decal Placement - 12/04/14 05:52 AM

Just did a "what looks best to me now" on the 340 wedge decal. Car is mostly original paint touch up in a few spots. Had to replace the Hood prior owner cut holes and mounted twister scoops and I couldnt live with it. Was a hood pin car also just havent put the holes in it yet. Looking forward to this year!

Your Duster is looking good, really like the red in the decal better.............Paul

Wow, that car is awesome!! I'm looking at a 71 duster 4 speed v24 car f8 green and it has a hood scoop on it as we'll. so many people add them and it'll be one of the first things I'd fix.

Re: 71 Duster V24 Hood Decal Placement - 12/17/14 01:24 AM

Was visiting a friend over the weekend and he recently dragged this 71 Duster out of a barn.
The hood paint and decal look to be original to me.
I took some rough measurements of the hood fender edge and hood front edge if these are of interest.

Re: 71 Duster V24 Hood Decal Placement - 12/17/14 03:54 AM

I'd like the measurements. I think these decals were put on like a lot of things back then. I noticed jack instruction decals are usually on an angle and all over the place on the underside trunk lid. It is only my opinion but I think there was an assembly line worker who stood by the left front fender and was instructed to put the decal on an angle, Depending on the shift, who was assigned to work that spot on that day if someone called in sick or was off, etc, determined how the decal went on.

Re: 71 Duster V24 Hood Decal Placement - 12/17/14 11:40 PM

I Agree that the installation of these decals was not a science on the assembly line and there would be some variances from car to car. Sorry these are not the greatest to go by.
This car was dragged out of a garage over a year ago and has been cleaned up a bit.

Fender tag, EV2 340 4 speed, drum brakes, black deluxe bench seat,AM radio, black side and tail stripe, V24. A pretty original car with a solid body that may have had the lower quarters repaired.

Looking at that Colorado car again, Does this show that the cars were painted fully body color and then the Organosol was painted on over the body color?

on the cowl, door and 1/4 tops, there was some evidence of body color paint under the organosol on my duster. I doubt they painted it much more than they would have painted the roof of a vinyl top car. judging by the hood of the colorado car, looks like they didn't waste any paint on the top side.
