A12 aircleaner base question

A12 aircleaner base question - 07/02/13 01:36 AM

I have what I think is an original A12 air cleaner base, but it does not have the rectangular surround. If it's been trimmed off it's been done well. There's a lip all the way around, except for 1 corner that does look trimmed. No jagged edges but I guess they could have been ground smooth. What do you guys think, regular A12 base or something else?
thanks,
Dave

Do you have a photo of the other side?

The two small half moon notches at the cover studs and the appearance that the tray is not stepped like an A12 makes me think it is not an A12..but I just took a closer look.....maybe just maybe it is

Looks like an A12 base that was cut & the cut edge rolled.

I've owned one like this and seen another at a swap meet. Maybe it was an over the counter piece? Even the top lid was the A12 style.

All indications are that this started life as an A12 air cleaner base.
Someone gave it a haircut...just took a bit too much off the sides.

Figure 125 for the lid leaving 160 for the base and someone got a deal.

If a part's been ruined, how is it a deal?

We've seen worse centers and someone good with sheetmetal re-make the outer with no problem. The lid is in great shape and worth what the buyer paid for it. A repo of the tray is $1500 min...

An even better deal is if you now have an original with a bad center and you just bought it

Looking at the photo I'm not sure the lid has the lip?

It doesn't but it's still worth a buck or a buck and a quarter, if not then even at the full price the center was still a deal (IMO).

I watched that auction just awaiting for my time to bid, unfortunately when I remembered and logged on, I was about 1 minute late and it was over.

I bought one nearly identical with a lil more timming for $300 shipped. about a month ago off eBay. The base has another cut out on it, but it has a nice correct lid.

I was going to keep my nice lid with the nice base discussed in this thread and sell the lesser of the two and hopefully break even, or very close to it.
I also sent the seller a message asking him to pass my name along to the buyer in case he may want to sell it and make a quick buck, or in case he decides not to use it at a later date.
I currently have two that are trimmed like this.

This one I also bought for $275 years ago from a Corvette owner...
sine one modified the lip, they carefully cut out the outer lip (A12 / T/A-AAR wide lip) and formed in a new center piece, but the base was nice, other than being trimmed.

Unfortunately it was in our ship that burned down Dec 26th 2005. The lid is badly warped and the base is also slightly. I can fix the base with enough patience, but I'm always searching for a better replacement...
