Re: 1970 Coronet RT ? - 12/05/08 08:42 PM

No, the tips weren't standard issue........ The code will not be in the fender tag..... But hey, they look great........

A lot of cool pictures of '70's......

Re: 1970 Coronet RT ? - 12/05/08 10:15 PM

I thought that they were standard on and R/T or a Super Bee 68-70? They were automatically deleted if the car was headed for CA because of CAFE they required turndown tips. It would be noted on the buidsheet one way or the other! Kind of like wheellip moldings? Standard, but not on the window sticker or tag? Does anyone know fore certain?

By the looks of THIS PAGE on Andy440's site, looks to me like they were optional on the 70.

But on THIS PAGE it looks like standard on 69 R/T and Super Bee.

Andy's site has a ton of great info and pictures!

In 1970 the N42 - "chrome exhaust tips" were a $20.80 option on Coronet R/T and/or Super Bee according to the '70 Dodge Salesman's Pocket Guide (9/69 issue) at Hamtramck Historical.

I don't see that it says optional? Just that there is a code for it! There is a code weather it's optional or not. It is presented on that sheet as though it is an option?

It would seem that it was extra cost on Super Bee's, not available in California and standard only on Hemi equipped cars....

Re: 1970 Coronet RT ? - 12/06/08 01:18 AM

My understanding is the Bee Hood was a STD option and the Ram Charger was Option you could check off

I also beleive that the 150 swipe dash cluster was a Std option and the Rallye dash was a checked off option as well...

Also... looking at n96 option it says not avalible with auto... I have a auto car with a N96 HOOD and a N96 code on fender tag...

Re: 1970 Coronet RT ? - 12/06/08 02:08 AM

Ramcharger Hood and Rallye IP were both extra cost options on the R/T. Automatic SPEED CONTROL was not available with the Ramchager Hood, no transmission restrictions.

Also, in an R/T when you ordered the Rally IP you got a Tach/Clock combo (tic/toc tach)... but you could order just a tach OR clock (or nothing) with the Standard IP (150mph sweep). Hope this helps... Dave

No that means Standard on Hemi cars except California Hemi cars. My California R/T 440 and my 70 Superbee 440+6 both have tips on the fender tag.

There a lot of wives tales about Chrome Tips and "California cars".

Another thing, what defines a "California car". N95 or sold new in California?? Or are those one in the same 100% of the time??

Do some other states/areas get N95 (like Denver area)?

Why would a Denver car be coded N95?

I was more curious as to why that calls out Hemi cars vs. 70 California (N95) E bodies with a hemi or 440+6 got turn downs.

I thought Denver had/has emission reg similar to California. They have a smog situation like SoCal. But don't know the time period on that.

I didn't want to make the assumption that N95 was only for California sold vehicles. Or L.A. plant built vehicles.

No disputing that. I also remember double taking at Pete Haldiman's old FC7 70 Hemi Challenger with turn downs (where's that car now).

I just hear/see a lot of bench race talk about ALL California car not getting tips or ALL LA built cars getting N95.

Re: 1970 Coronet RT ? - 12/06/08 06:34 PM

For 1970

CHALLENGER
N95 - Evaporative Control System - required on all cars registered in the State of California N.A. otherwise .......... $37.85
N97 - Noise Reduction Package - required on all cars registered in the state of California equipped with 440-6 engines or 426 Hemi .......... N.C.

CHARGER
N42 - EXHAUST Bright Tips (N.A. California) R/T only .......... $20.80
N95 - Evaporative Control System - required on all cars registered in the State of California N.A. otherwise .......... $37.85
N97 - Noise Reduction Package - required on all cars registered in the state of California equipped with 383-4 or 440 engines .......... N.C.

CORONET
N42 - EXHAUST Bright Tips (N.A. California) Super Bee & R/T only .......... $20.80
N95 - Evaporative Control System - required on all cars registered in the State of California N.A. otherwise .......... $37.85
N97 - Noise Reduction Package - required on all cars registered in the state of California equipped with 383-4 or 440 engines .......... N.C.

DART
N95 - Evaporative Control System - required on all cars registered in the State of California N.A. otherwise .......... $37.85

POLARA & MONACO
N95 - Evaporative Control System - required on all cars registered in the State of California N.A. otherwise .......... $37.85

This info is taken trom the 1970 Dodge Pocket Salesman's Guide posted on Hamtramck Historical.
Does anyone have the '70 PLYMOUTH version? It would be great to see it posted also.

Although not written in stone, here's my take:
N95 - for any car destined to be "SOLD" new in California, I'm sure some cars with N95 were SOLD new in other states due to dealer trades & sales bank cars that were not in demand in California. Any ordered car that was delivered NEW in the State of California should have N95. N95 concerned the fuel system: fuel tank venting, gas caps, carburetors, etc..

N97 - Noise reduction was accieved in different ways on different body platforms, again California "only".
E-body - eliminate N42 "bright exhaust tips" from 440-6 & Hemi cars.
B-body - addition of resonators on 383-4 & 440 cars. These are the same resonators found "stock" on Hemi cars.

N42 - According to the "pocket guide" none for California in:
440-6 & Hemi Challenger R/Ts
383-4, 440-6 & Hemi Super Bees
440-4, 440-6 & Hemi Charger R/Ts & Coronet R/Ts

BUT

There are exceptions, I own a LA assembled 440-6 4-spd GTX; fender tag reads: N41 N42 N85 N95 N96 N97 or is that a Plymouth thing?

Re: 1970 Coronet RT ? - 12/06/08 06:57 PM

getting back to the original post, my '68 R/T is coded on the fender tag for wheelwell and rocker moldings and not for the exhaust tips but it has them anyway (and always has)

All the chrome doodads, including tips, were part of the R/T package (except the CA cars) and the tag and/or BS may or may not be coded for them seperately. They were optional on Bees.

Not to be picky, but the original post mentioned the 1970 model year.. Also, you mentioned you car always had them. I'm taking it you're the original owner of the car or bought it from the original owner. Could very well have had them originally, but as an option. Using the point of "all R/T models came with all chrome doodads" is false. My v-code '70 Charger R/T didn't have them, wasn't on the BS. It came with turn-downs....... Either that, or someone took the tips off somewhere down the road. If the bright tips where standard on R/T and Superbees only, then why would there be a $20+ option cost listed.

Just food for thought or I'm missing something.

The 70 Plymouth salesman pocket book is hard to find and $$$ when you do.

The 70 Plymouth data book will be on HH soon.

Re: 1970 Coronet RT ? - 12/06/08 08:19 PM

Posts that stray from the original question often indicate how unknown the answers to these questions are. Differences exist within a model year & model. Bringing other years and models into the question doesn't help to clarify the question or answer. I know I am guilty of this also in my post above, but I was trying to point out the facts of the differences within Dodge in the '70 model year, after the Challengers got thrown into the post.

So ... does anybody have a b'cast sheet (or LA fender tag) for a '70 Coronet R/T, Super Bee or Charger R/T that shows: N42 N95 N97 ??

I think the original question was answered, N42 was an OPTION ($20.80 ) on '70 Coronet R/Ts.
It would be listed on the b'cast sheet or window sticker, and on a LA assembled car's fender tag.

I have the build sheet to my 70 Bee. Duel exhaust is marked, but N42 Exhaust tips is not marked? I guess my Bee did not come with tips!
My car was built at Lynch Rd.

I know these are not B bodies but I would think B&E cars would be the same for California.

These two tags are from a couple of 1970 cudas I have, a 440+6 & 440 4bbl. Both cars are 4 speeds both cars have n95 but the shaker car has turned down exhaust. I was told years ago that if you had fresh air intake the tips would be deleted for noise reduction.

The 440 4bbl... n41, n42, n95

The 440+6... n41, n95, n96, n97

That's the problem & source of confusion. You can't compare apples to oranges, in this case b-bodies to e-bodies or 1970 Coronets to 1968 Coronets or 440-4bbl to 440-6bbl.

On an e-body the SHAKER had nothing to do with N97 - "noise reduction".

Then please explain why the noise reduction is on the shaker car.

In California n95 + n96 got you n97 on an e body. I am sure that a few might have slipped through, but they would have been an anomaly. You must remember 1970 was the first year for earth day, and all kinds of pollution were targeted to be reduced including noise pollution. Here in California the intake volume through the fresh air system made enough noise along with the exhaust note to be over the limit, so you got n97.

Why does the 440 4 bbl have tips? Do you think the guy that bought the 6bbl didn't have the $20 for tips, or maybe he didn't want the ev2 shaker car to be too flashy with chrome tips?

Barry, Same 2 pages?

I put some time/effort into this topic, this is what I came up with:
1970 performance cars sold in California

Super Bee
HEMI - N41, N95, N96, N97 (STD or Mandatory) N97 = NO TIPS
383 4bbl - N41, N95, N97 (STD or Mandatory) & N42, N96 (optional) N97 = noise reduction mufflers
440 6bbl - N41, N95, N97 (STD or Mandatory) & N42, N96 (optional) N97 = add resonators

Coronet R/T
HEMI - N41, N95, N96, N97 (STD or Mandatory) N97 = NO TIPS
440 4bbl - N41, N95, N97 (STD or Mandatory) & N96 (optional) N97 = NO TIPS
440 6bbl - N41, N95, N97 (STD or Mandatory) & N42, N96 (optional) N97 = add resonators

Charger R/T
HEMI - N41, N95, N97 (STD or Mandatory) N97 = NO TIPS
440 4bbl - N41, N95, N97 (STD or Mandatory) N97 = NO TIPS
440 6bbl - N41, N95, N97 (STD or Mandatory) & N42 (optional) N97 = add resonators

Challenger
340 4bbl - N41, N42, N95 (STD or Mandatory) & N94, N96 (limited/optional)

Challenger R/T
HEMI - N41, N95, N97 (STD or Mandatory) & N94, N96 (limited/optional) N97 = NO TIPS
383 4bbl - N41, N42, N95 (STD or Mandatory) & N94, N96 (limited/optional)
440 4bbl - N41, N42, N95 (STD or Mandatory) & N94, N96 (limited/optional)
440 6bbl - N41, N95, N97 (STD or Mandatory) & N94, N96 (limited/optional) N97 = NO TIPS

Road Runner
HEMI - N41, N95, N96, N97 (STD or Mandatory) N97 = NO TIPS
383 4bbl - N41, N95, N97 (STD or Mandatory) & N42, N96 (optional) N97 = noise reduction mufflers
440 6bbl - N41, N95, N97 (STD or Mandatory) & N42, N96 (optional) N97 = add resonators

GTX
HEMI - N41, N95, N96, N97 (STD or Mandatory) N97 = NO TIPS
440 4bbl - N41, N95, N97 (STD or Mandatory) & N96 (optional) N97 = NO TIPS
440 6bbl - N41, N95, N97 (STD or Mandatory) & N42, N96 (optional) N97 = add resonators

'Cuda
HEMI - N41, N95, N97 (STD or Mandatory) & N96 (optional) N97 = NO TIPS
340 4bbl - N41, N42, N95 (STD or Mandatory) & N96 (limited/optional)
383 4bbl - N41, N42, N95 (STD or Mandatory) & N96 (limited/optional)
440 4bbl - N41, N42, N95 (STD or Mandatory) & N96 (limited/optional)
440 6bbl - N41, N95, N97 (STD or Mandatory) & N96 (optional) N97 = NO TIPS

The guides make it "clear-as-mud",
but what happened to a 383 4bbl Charger, Sport Satellite, or Coronet 500?
I'm thinking the 383 4bbl, 440 4bbl, & 440 6bbl b-bodies with N97 may have required resonators only if "tips" were ordered??

More to follow ...

I thought those cars never got tips anyway. Neither did 70 383 N code E-bodies

Only non performance package (R/T, GTX, RR..) cars I can think of that got dual chrome tips were 70 A66 Challengers, 71 340 Challengers (non R/T), and maybe 71 Charger S/E 440 cars???

Getting off subject with tips, would be the 64-66 273 HP single big resonator chrome tips. Did every 273 HP get them? Or just Dart GT's and Formula "S". You could get a 273 HP Dart station wagon.

You went down the road with the 383 Sport Satelites and Chargers.

I think 70 A66 340 Challengers should be added to that list since they got tips and they are really a fairly parallel car to a 70 340 Cuda.

Wow, this thread's had lots of action since I checked last!

As DodgeMaterial said, the Auto. refers to Automatic speed control, not automatic transmission. My '70 Super Bee is a 727 car with N96.

Question #1

How rare of an Option is a Remote trunk latch release on a 70 Coronet R/T??

Re: 1970 Coronet RT ? - 01/11/09 06:03 PM

P45 - power assist - "deck lid release"

The option was a factory c-body option, not listed as available on a b-body.
Is it "factory original" to the car?
Is it listed on the b'cast sheet or original window sticker?

My guess: added by the dealership or borrowed from a c-body in the past 38+ years

My post from 2+ years ago edited

For 1970

CHALLENGER
N95 - Evaporative Control System - required on all cars registered in the State of California (N.A. otherwise) .......... $37.85
N97 - Noise Reduction Package - required on all cars registered in the state of California equipped with 440-6 engines or 426 Hemi .......... N.C.

CHARGER
N42 - EXHAUST Bright Tips R/T w/HEMI (N.A. California) .......... STD
N42 - EXHAUST Bright Tips R/T (440-4 & 440-6) .......... $20.80
N95 - Evaporative Control System - required on all cars registered in the State of California (N.A. otherwise) .......... $37.85
N97 - Noise Reduction Package - required on all cars registered in the state of California equipped with 383-4 or 440 engines .......... N.C.

CORONET
N42 - EXHAUST Bright Tips Super Bee & R/T w/HEMI (N.A. California) .......... STD
N42 - EXHAUST Bright Tips Super Bee (383-4 & 440-6) & R/T (440-4 & 440-6) .......... $20.80
N95 - Evaporative Control System - required on all cars registered in the State of California (N.A. otherwise) .......... $37.85
N97 - Noise Reduction Package - required on all cars registered in the state of California equipped with 383-4 or 440 engines .......... N.C.

DART
N95 - Evaporative Control System - required on all cars registered in the State of California (N.A. otherwise) .......... $37.85

POLARA & MONACO
N95 - Evaporative Control System - required on all cars registered in the State of California (N.A. otherwise) .......... $37.85

B-body - addition of resonators on 440+6 cars. These are the same resonators found "stock" on Hemi cars.

N42 - none for California in:
440-6 & Hemi Challenger R/Ts
Hemi Super Bees
Hemi Charger R/Ts & Coronet R/Ts

I have the broadcast sheet for my car (WM21V0A) that is N41, N42, N95 and N97 if you still need it.

Just because a car was an L.A.built car dosen't necessarily mean that it had the California noise reduction package does it? What if the car was going to another state besides California?

I believe that's correct. Cars built at LA but not intended for sale in California should not be required to have the California specific articles, N95 or N97.

My 70 6-pack bee had an aftermarket exhaust system on it when I bought it, and it has a factory spring clip nut with a broken bolt still in it on the inside of the rear frame rail a little forward from where the hanger would mount if chrome tips were used. Does this sound like where a hanger would have been if the car had turn down pipes originally?

On the bottom of the rail or on the side , trying to remember where it was on my 68 sport satellite ?

It's on the inside of the frame rail facing the gas tank. If I remember right, it's about 6-8" forward of the holes for the chrome tip hanger.

There were 3 65 Valient cheapo 2 door sedans here when new. They all were 4 speeds and had the large chrome tipped resonator.
