Dash Frame Paint: Semi gloss or flat black? 69 B-body - 01/08/13 04:53 AM

Greetings!

I'm about to paint the dash frame for the 69 Charger this weekend but am not sure on the shade of black. It looked flat black but in some hidden areas seemed like satin black. Any insight?

I have a 15% gloss satin black that I was going to use on the tail panel in place of Organsol, does that sound about right?

Many thanks,

From a spray can, Rustoleum textured black is very close. It has a very fine texture like original.

From a gun I've heard of using application techniques to get that fine texture finish. Maybe someone with experiance at that will chime in.

I've seen stuff people have shot from a gun look not right. Whereas its pretty hard to screw up the Rustoleum textured. The Rustoleum texture is above average for spray can durable, but real paint from a gun should be tougher.

If youre not going to use the correct suede finish paint be very careful with the amout of gloss you use. The sun glare is awful with any amount of gloss paint used on top of the dash frame. DHMHIK!

Do yourself a favor and call Instrument Specialties and get the correct paint.

I made that mistake. Had to take the dash back out and respray it with a satin clear.

I had to have a color match done for my Demons dash so I could use acrylic enamel. No recipe other than laquer at $80/pint.
Mixer added "flattener" to get to the "suede" gloss level and it came out great.

Great advice! I didn't think about glare, what a mess having to take the dash back out! I'll do a test run on some cardboard and check in the sun before spraying the dash.

Thanks

You probably wont get the same glare effect from the cardboard, The glare comes from the sun hitting the dash and reflecting up into the windshield and back into your face.

Get the correct suede... this is something you only want to do once... IMO...

I agree. The cardboard will absorb the paint instead of letting it dry like it should. I would test out on a spare piece of metal.

I had mine Powdercoated, I've sprayed plenty of the Suede, got two quarts of it at my shop.. The powdercoat is a very good match...

Be careful because flattening agent is usually white and can give a gray tint to the black. Spray bomb stuff is not really tough enough for a dash, in my opinion. 2 part out of a gun would be much more resistant to accidents. DAMHIK

On a 69 Roadrunner I did last year I got the original formula in laquer for the dash. It came out great. It was kinda pricey though.
