Call gets you the owner's rep. Owner has several other A38s (and NOS parts). Was interested in the 73 Polara, but in pieces and $$$. Rep is semi-knowledgeable.

Nice 70. Seems to be trolling unless the price is right.

Cool car, and ..... that engine's "Chrysler blue" & 086 = 330hp (non-HP)!

I believe the 69 LAPD Bel's got orange road runner engines.

I wonder if this 70 Bel has rear sway bar that is police spec only (LAPD only?).

While this 70 LAPD is cool, is it worth more than a 70 column auto B7 Road Runner in the same exact condition?

There would be a code for that on the data tag? Too bad the seller posted such a bad picture of the data tag.

IIRC Production date of this LAPD car is too early in the model year for the OE rear sway bar. Doesn't mean it wasn't added during its service life.

Re: 1970 LAPD Belvedere - 08/11/12 04:32 AM

if the motor is the wrong color maybe it was a replacement---on our 69 plymouths when they got close to 70K they were sent into the plymouth dealer for a transmission replacement on warranty---some cars with over 100k would have engine issues and new engines were bought and replaced by our shops personnel---shops guys were strictly RnR guys- tires- lubes-tuneup-----even front end work was sent out----when the 69's were auctioned off city employees were not allowed to bid---i heard a guy bid the first car up to $169 and got it---the auctioneer offered one or all same price and this guy took every car--later heard he was a used dealer and he covered up the roof holes and A pillar holes with a vinyl roof and sold the hell of them---sadly a bunch had new trannys and new engines----oh well---took more than few 140MPH runs in them---and some claimed they were radared at 155mph--but i personnaly didnt see that....bob

I thought that started in 1969?

Would an 1970 N-code 383, a/c, auto, four door B-body non police car get a blue or orange motor.

Sort of surprised this car is an original A/C car. I thought most police cars in 1969/1970 were non A/C.

I think that is RK41NOA18xxxx

But is there a seperate option for pursuit duty like on later cop car that have A38 code. On those later cars you can get cop car with xK41 vins but not the handling stuff the A38 package has. But again, those are mid 70's police cars not 1970.

Re: 1970 LAPD Belvedere - 08/11/12 02:34 PM

the 69 was non AC and also had drum brakes--the 70,s had air but i dont remember if they had discs yet--that may have come in 1971---for those that dont know the police package brakes were the biggest truck brakes made---they compared very well with the new discs offered by ford and chev and may have delayed the introduction of the discs...bob

My first car was a 70 Belvedere police unit. RK VIN. The cars with 383 and AC were non HP units painted blue.

My 69 Superbee factory AC car is also a non hp engine painted turquiose and not orange.

If that care was not 3000 miles away it would be in my driveway. And yes they were basically 4 door RR's. I had mine fitted with a GTX front clip and tailights and had the buckets and center console installed.

Re: 1970 LAPD Belvedere - 08/12/12 04:55 AM

I don't think this car was LAPD. All of the LAPD cars I have seen have been green, and the axle code on the tag is 999 due to the rear sway bar. Plus I believe 1970 was the last year for drum brakes, this car has discs. It is still a legit RK41N car though, which is awesome. Would like to see what agency used this car. There was a legit LAPD Belvedere for sale at The Nats.
I used to own a 1970 Plymouth Satellite that was a Seattle PD traffic car, it was a cool car to drive. The Seattle Police Museum has since bought it and restored it back to in service condition. Here is a link to the info on the car, I took the pic in 1999.

Interesting.

Do the SO numbers on the data tag correspond to any particular agency or special fleet custom buyer. I thought some of the LAPD and CHP cars were built to each agencies custom spec.

Also, could you decode that tag I posted? I don't know what the F codes stand for. I took that tag from a Satelite in the Wilmington, CA Pick A Part "big yard" in about 1989 or so.

Thanks, N41 makes more sense.

Also, did the B42 HD disk come with 11" rear brakes like the T/A-AAR's had?

I can picture the gold Satelite police car in my head. But I can't remember if I got any parts off it. I was looking for 71 383 HP motor to replace the .040 motor in my Challenger R/T.

Got a 71 383 HP short block about that same time out of a 71 Polara "K" code car with like 70K original miles. Shame the car was in the yard, it was a very nice car. I should have just honed the block, but machine shop "convinced" us to rebuilt it. I say "K" code because the car was all white, had cloth insert seats, no light bar holes, Goodyear high miler hoses. The guy who spotted the car thought it was a Fire Chief's car or someone of that nature. It didn't seem to have been used for real Police duty. That guy got the fender tag.

saw the topic and thought I'd add a bit. I own a 70 Plymouth Belvedere 4 dr ex colorado pursuit car. RK41NOA. 383 4 barrel car, has the factory front disc brakes, large rear drums, front sway bar, doesn't look like it ever had a rear sway bar, hemi torsion bars, 80 lb oil pressure dash gauge, white exterior, brown interior, radio delete, non air, nice original rubber mat floor covers, spotlights, SPD 7/4/70. Bought as a project, was sitting around for several years. Has a fender tag, don't have in front of me right now.

Assuming that is a real police package car, I would at least question whether LAPD ever bought that particular year/model. I was on LAPD (10 years later) and I never heard of or saw any 1970s of that model, although I did see/drive vehicles from that era, some at the police driving school, where they retained some hot, older cars, and there were a couple of oldies still out in the field. I don't know if LAPD has made records of their vehicle purchases available, but if so I would check there first.

Does it have a rear sway bar? Details on condition? Rust or rust repair? Drivability?

Tough to find comparable police car sales. Personally I like to put cars like that in rank order between other car that are easier to pinpoint values to. IMHO it's worth less than a 70 Road Runner column shift ok color in the same condition. Is it worth less/more than a 70 Sport Satelite 2 door N code car same codition?

The car is a driver. Yes it has a rear sway bar, although it looks aftermarket. Couldn't get under it enough to see the upper arch to see if there were factory fasteners.
Photos at start of thread accurately represent the car. Some rust in floor not too bad.

Re: 1970 LAPD Belvedere - 08/26/12 04:07 PM

My first car was a ex cop 7o belvedere. Bought it in 73 for $143 with burnt valves, slipping 727 and a broken torsion bar. Motor was base-line 2bbl, non ac, front, but no rear sway bar. The torsion bars werehd (hemi) and there was extra reinforcement. All very similar to this car yet came with black exterior, white overpainted doors and top. Tan interior and rubber floor "carpet". It had a driver side spotlight and a antenna mast delete plate that, iirc, was a piece of metal formed to fit flush but was screwed on from a single stud spot welded onto the underside.
If I wasn't in the process of moving I'd be looking seriously at that car (except for the rust issue it's a nice offering).

Does anyone know what the correct front and rear sway bars are on a 70 Belvedere LAPD car? Is there any listing in the parts book?

Build sheet has two notes:
"Heavy duty frt & rr"
"RR sway bars"

Any help appreciated. Also, if you know where I can locate the rear bar and attachments please let me know.

Re: 1970 LAPD Belvedere - 09/07/12 06:05 PM

If you are still trying to determine whether or not that actually was an LAPD car, you might try contacting the LAPD historical society and asking if they have VIN records of former department cars and, if not, where those records might be.

http://www.laphs.org/

Re: 1970 LAPD Belvedere - 09/07/12 07:26 PM

Thanks for the info. LAPD has no info these cars. Neither does the historical society. Which is too bad. Dmv purged all old records some time ago. They no longer do this but its all gone for the early 70s. SID Photos is the only place that has any info. They have a pretty good photo collection of old police cars and equipment.

As for the car this thread started with, I don't know if it still for sale. After a lot of looking and research, the jury is still out if it is a genuine LAPD car, might be - might not..

I did purchase a Belvedere which definitely could be a LAPD car. Drums all around, no rear defroster, factory sway bars, possible shop numbers on license plate holder and several other indicators, I'll know more when it's in my garage.

I do need green steering wheel with full circle horn ring for the new ride.

Re: 1970 LAPD Belvedere - 09/07/12 07:58 PM

I bought a 74 Fury 3 cop car that was used as a city car for the town of Morrison, IL. 440, steel crank, 6 pack rods, TQ and webbing on the block. Polyglass pursuit radials and special suspension are a few tidbits that I remember. It also had a vernier-type cable to the carb mounted under the dash. I was told it was so the trooper could idle the engine up while sitting to aid with engine cooling. My mom told me to just keep that and sell the 67 RT Coronet. Probably would have been a good idea.

Hi,
the green belvedere from new york got here and I am happy to say I found the LAPD shop number exactly where they were written on the rear license plate holder.

The blue Pasadena belvedere was relisted on craigslist on Sunday. It was sold two week ago and picked up today. So its gone..... gone to my driveway!

so I guess I own two k code 70 belvederes. I'll drive the blue one while I fix the LAPD one...

The blue one drives just like I remember.

Hi all,
Drove the blue 70 Belvedere today. Got siren, lights and radios in. Fixed all the problems like holes in floor and moved aftermarket amplifier.
Car drives good and seems to in mechanically sound shape.
I'm going to start on other 70 Belvedere after I finish putting the engine in the 73 police package matador.
Turns out the green Belvedere has a LAPD shop number on rear license plate holder. I'm collecting parts now.
Big news is the LAPD car had a single rear California blue and yellow plate in trunk. It also had 15 years of registration cards from 1971 thru 1980s. These reg cards had the plate number the same as the one in trunk. I was whining to my friend who sold me the car if I only had the front plate. He did. I was able to register the car with the original California plates issued in 1970!
More later.

those cars were called 4 door roadrunners by the guys that drove them--also there is more to LA than LAPD there is also the LA sheriff and 50 other citys in the megopolis--most state police would write specs on cars ordered then get the bids and smaller juristictions could add their orders on with the same specs and the same price---chrysler at that time was showing about $100 dollar profit for the dealer that sold the cars because they wanted their cars out there in the public domain---sort of like what wins on sunday sells on monday....bob

Colorado's state bid priced many different types and styles on police packages that, as bob pointed out, could be bid by any local government agencies. The state itself bought Fury Is for the patrol. It had an interesting option that included the factory installing an NMO (new Motorola) 3/4" antenna mount in the roof center but no antenna. The coax ran down the rear pillar to the trunk where it was coiled and unterminated. The radio installers at 4201 E Arkansas would mount a Larsen 5/8 wave antenna on the roof and install a 110 Watt Motorola Motrac in the trunk. I never saw that antenna option on the Belvederes or on any of the municipal orders in Colorado.
Denver Police never ordered police package cars and drove standard grocery getter Fords off the fleet lot with few heavy duty items on them.

Wow. That sounds like a great project. Obviously I was wrong on my earlier post speculating about whether LAPD ever bought 70 Belvederes. I have since seen a photo on some website (I should have bookmarked but failed to do so) of such an LAPD car.

Also, re: your comment about restoring a 73 Matador as well, I did drive one of the Matadors at the police driving school and in Hollywood Division, where we had a dual purpose Matador (I think it was green), and those were definitely great police cars.

If you ever want to sell either of those, send me a message. Those are important pieces of police history and it is great to see you are preserving them. My wife, who also was an LAPD officer in Hollywood and worked on the vice detail, jokingly (I think) wanted me to buy an ex-LAPD B-Wagon of the type that was used to round up prostitutes on Sunset Blvd, drunks elsewhere, etc. I was less enthusiastic because the B-Wagons were not exactly hot rods.
