Challenger.

I used some auto parts store stuff 10 years ago and its pretty smooth now, just wondering what everyone is using to be fairly accurate?

Get the air cleaner hot, like 200-250 degrees in a oven. Then put a cover coat. Back in oven at 150-200 for 10-15 minutes. Then final coat or repeat once more. Doesn't need thick coats. Then bake for 1 hour at 150-200 degrees.

Will look very uniform and will be VERY durable. Way more uniform that factory. Factory had runs and not uniform coverage.

The run in this valve cover it because I put a coat on too thick. Next run I experimented with multiple very thin distant fog coats on that air cleaner top. That was over reacting and got paint everywhere . I got less wrinkle and more of a uniform textured look. Best technique was in between both those ideas with the same looking results as the distant fog coats.

Check with a local powder coater.
Not that expensive and the results are awesome and very durable.

On that stuff I ran in the oven, I can run my fingernail across it pressing down as hard as I can and not scratch the paint.

I don't know about the OP. But my wife would scratch my eyes out if I cook car parts in her oven.

Powder coating has it's place and looks great, however it does not result in a 100% factory appearance, mainly because a powder coated finish is too even where as a painted part is less even and more blotchy between smooth and wrinkled areas. Also, if you have ANY dings, scrapes, or other imperfections they WILL show through powder coating, same goes for the paint but to a lesser degree than powder coat.

I used the VHT wrinkle plus but you dont have to put it in the oven apply 3 even heavy coats then put the parts out in the sun and watch it wrinke then bring it inside done if the parts are preped takes about 1/2 hour to do

Scott in the day of concours incorrect over restoration I would have thought that the overdone look of powdercoat would be welcomed ???

Re: What brand of wrinkle finish on 71 340 Air Cleaner? - 06/04/12 03:24 AM

We just did a 69 HiPo air cleaner today in my oven for Troy's 69 340 Swinger in Kylon wrinkle.

Maybe he will post pictures??

Heated oven to 170 degrees. Put air cleaner in for about 10-15 minutes. Sprayed a pretty decent wet coat of paint. Back in over for 15 minutes. Noticed some thin spots. Out of oven for 2nd coat put on all the way around. Back in over for 20 minutes.

He liked what he saw, so he took it out. Was nervous about it changing it's look if left longer. Personally, I think he should have left it in there for an hour. It would be fully dried by then and I think be more durable.

Talk about a small world....this is what Steve and I did today.

Preheat oven to 170 degrees.
Place part in oven for 5 to 8 min.
Pull part out and apply a medium coat of paint on part.
Place back in oven for 10 to 13 minutes.
Pull part out of oven and apply second medium coat of paint on part.
Place back in oven for 15 minutes.
Let cool and your done.
Last but not least.....don't let the wife find out that your cooking car parts in her oven.

Re: What brand of wrinkle finish on 71 340 Air Cleaner? - 06/04/12 05:15 AM

Another tip....Once done painting and letting them cool off avoid letting any part of the painted surface to contact anything for at least a couple days, the paint takes some time to harden off and sometimes what seems cool/dry/cured, is actually still soft enough to take imprints from objects in contact with it, even really soft objects like packing bubble wrap, etc.

AMHIK!

Yea, that's why you came over and did it in MY oven.

If you would have left it in the oven for an hour, when it cooled I could file my fingernails on it without a scratch!

Re: What brand of wrinkle finish on 71 340 Air Cleaner? - 06/04/12 07:29 AM

Question for the ones who have done this. Did you put a primer coat on first or something before applying the wrinkle? Prepping the aircleaner or anything else being wrinkled I guess is what I'm saying.

Re: What brand of wrinkle finish on 71 340 Air Cleaner? - 06/04/12 11:47 AM

Yes
Prep the parts like you would for any other paint
etch primer, primer, sand
The wrinkle finish dosn't hide anythig if you have rust pits make sure you fill them

Ive used the Eastwood paint. Worked great. I dont remember if I primed it or not. I also used the grill out side so the wife wouldnt kill me.

I don't prime them, I just paint over bare metal (as did the factory) be sure the metal is super clean and use a good acid based metal prep like Ospho first.

Re: What brand of wrinkle finish on 71 340 Air Cleaner? - 06/04/12 06:19 PM

The wife would kill me for cooking an air cleaner at home. Its kind of like the guys who do a transmission in the bath tub....

I appreciate the feedback. I'll probably go VHT or HD and report back.

My car is rare in my eyes, but nowhere near correct for now. It will never be one of those perfect restorations, but i do want to be as accurate as I can one day.

Its a 318 car to begin with, but all other options are less common so I love the car for what it is.

Its the wrong color, wrong motor, wrong trans, raised hood, cut-out dual exhaust valance, etc.

I do want the air cleaner to turn out nice though.

There are very few things that I use rattle can primer on anymore. Seems like the quality in that type of primer is very poor and does more harm than good.

The only reason I use primer on engines is to even out all of the dark color parts and the light color parts. Because of this I only use 1 1/2 cans of color to cover the entire engine. If no primer was used in would of been over 3 1/2 cans.

BTW....I only use 1/2 to 3/4 of a can of primer on the engine before color.

Bare steel under 69 air cleaner lid Troy painted.

I painted the inside gloss black. I see no reason to use the wrinkle paint on the inside and would never consider leaving it bare steel.

I recently restored one for a friend and I used Eastwoods black self etching primer.

Instead of using the oven to keep the wife happy..
Use a heat lamp for about 30 minutes..

Just my $0.02..

I did that with my Hemi Valve covers and I could not keep the wrinkle consistence from one side to the next. The oven was by far the best way to do it for me. It was even better when it was not my oven!!
