68 silver GTX , need to know what the wheels were on car off production line.

fender tag is- 64 7 6 1
07 16
95 8 48 S6X AA1 B81
RS23 83 5 46 C04 117136

will that tell us what we need to know?

bummer.... what do you suggest?

owner is willing to put on steeles

think that would be the most likely wheel used with small hub caps?

Here is a pic of a 68 Coronet RT tag. the number 44 is the tire code for this car. Standard redline. You can see where this code is and look at your tag. Then come back here with that code number. I don't know all the 68 tire codes.

46 is your tire code which is F70X14 white walls, and if I had to guess it probably came with hubcaps. Generally you need to have the build sheet to know exactly what wheels came with it.

Go nutty and put some decent sized wheels and tires to fill the wheelwells up.

According to the 68 Plymouth price list code 46 is a "white streak" tire. Perhaps some confusion and/or mistakes are because on the second page, code 46 also says "replaces F70x14 red streak tire". Maybe someone missed the "replaces".

Seemed strange that they showed 2 different style tires with same code. Just copied what i found on a decoder page on the web.

If the car codes with white wall tires i would say it had full wheel covers.

There is no way of knowing without the broadcast sheet. If you don't have that, maybe you trace back to the original owner.

There were four different factory installed options for a 68 GTX. Standard dog dish hubcaps, an optional set of "deluxe wheel covers" also optional "sport wheel covers" and the top of the line set chrome road wheels.

Some ways that you can possibly narrow it down. If the car is equipped with all four of these options. L/S remote mirror, AM radio, Power steering, and 3 speed wipers. There's a good chance you can eliminate the dog dish hubcaps, as those four options plus the deluxe wheel covers are part of the basic group.

While I'm certainly a fan of steelies and dog dish caps, I tend to think that most GTXs would have had road wheels or at lest full cover hub caps. If the GTX was an Ordered car (Code U-1)then hard to tell what the original owner was thinking at the time - many were probably bought with base wheels with the idea of changing them out for something aftermarket soon after purchase. If the car was a Sales Bank car then usually would have had nicer wheels to help sell the vehicle. "Most" GTXs and Sport Satellites tend to be optioned out more so than the Road Runners. That GTX looks very nice already and either way they go with wheels will still awesome when it is done!

You could probably photoshop any of the 68 full size hubcaps to see what they might look like. Good luck

thanks for all the reply's ......i'm doing this GTX only for the fun of it with a friend from work that saw i was into Mopars.

my brother had one back in the 80's , and we cut it all up for the drags.

it's a special project to me to be able to re-build one back to stock as it came off the production line''

according to broadcast sheet, the wheels are code 16A. The tire code is 44, and the wheel covers is 01. Any ideas what they mean??? Wanting it to look like it did off the line. Thanks

From my '68 RR build sheet I can tell what it isn't and a little reverse engineering we can get close.

On my sheet:
Under the box labeled Wheel is 300

30 = 14 x 5.5 " Styled Road
0 = Color: chrome

Box labeled "wheel cover"
= 98 "Chrome Dome"

Since your car is paint code AA1 and the 3rd digit for the "Wheel" box is "A", that would mean to me the wheel was painted the same color as your car. I would then deduct that the 16 indicates some type of steel wheel.

The code 44 is the tire which is F70x14 Red Streak "Speedway" (same as mine)

I can't tell you what type of wheel cover/hub cap is code 01.
