1970 Road Wheels and painted Drums

1970 Road Wheels and painted Drums - 04/19/12 01:38 AM

When I disassembled my 70 Sport Satellite, which came with the road wheels (Magnum 500s), ALL four drums which are still original, have red paint on them.

I wasn't going to repaint the drums, but they look soooo much better painted I think . . . .

Did the factory always paint the drums on road wheel optioned cars ??

Yes, If the car came with Road wheels or Rally wheels, the drums were painted red. If the car had steel wheels with hubcaps, the drums were left natural.

Yes - in '68-'71, cars with "Road wheels" or "Rallye wheels" had red drums.

Not always.

Challenger T/A with trim rings and dog dishes. At least one had black painted drums from the factory.

I was pretty sure my survivor '74 'Cuda (rallyes) has red drums...guess I'll have to check now.

I thought...and somewhere have the factory papers....that it was a hemi suspension thing to have the red drums.

Isn't it just the face of the drum that's red......and a sloppy job with a brush?

Nope, that would be incorrect.

My 74 Duster360 had red painted drums from the factory. With Rallye wheels. . .

so what about cars that came with factory disc brakes up front? did the rotors get painted red also or just the face of the rear drums? Seems silly to only have red showing through the rears and not the fronts.

Just the drums I think.

The disks don't work as well if you paint them!

I posted the DRUM Factory print a few posts up, I have a print somewhere?, either in Manual, on CD, or in the "pictures saved" on my puter....IIRC, just the face (basically the side showing thru the rim slots/holes) of the caliper was brushed with the same drum paint, no paint on the rotor...if I find it, I'll post it...at "work" right now

I remember Dayclona stating the calipers were also painted red. I don't believe it was discussed any further. Is it possible an engineering drawing was made up but they decided not to go ahead with that procedure?

I sure would like to know the paint-code of the red drum paint...

Id appreciate that since my car is a factory disc brake car. I currently have the rear drums natural cast color since I thought it would look strange with just red in the back and bare metal up front.

We just picked up a 72 charger rallye last week for parts. It is a factory power front disc car and it still had the red painted rear drums.

We didn't take the front wheels off so I could not tell you about the calipers.

The paper Daylcona posted is the one I have here somewhere. (I remembered incorrectly about the hemi suspesion however..it's been a long time)

I don;t have the exact details handy, but the calipers were also painted red...at least the area seen through the wheel.

Ok, great. thanks. Would anyone have any of the assembly sheets that show this also? i'd love to have some kind of factory documentation to support this at shows.

That would be the drawing Dayclona posted, a blueprint from Chrysler spelling it out.
Unless people are faking blueprints now.

Thanks Mark, I printed that one out but after closer inspection on it, there is nothing on it that says about if the face of the caliper should or should not be painted.

Still have lots of docs/pics to go thru....found this one that describes the caliper on B42 equipped cars (heavy duty discs 11" rear drum) as being "orange"?.....if you compare the description between #'s 14 and 21
