Another 8 3/4 Detail Question - 03/19/12 08:42 PM
I'm working on a '69 GTX with a 440, auto on the column, 8 3/4 with a sure grip 3.23. When cleaning it up I was able to find just a few black stripes under the chuck and you could see remnants of the white number on the side. The yellow stenciled numbers on the axle tube couldn't be seen. What are the correct numbers to go back on the rear end? And what do these numbers mean? Thanks for the help!!

Considering I never got a decent answer when I asked this question, I would like to know these things too!

Great info! This GTX had manual brakes, 11x3 drums up front and 11x2.5 drums on the the rear. I wish I had more info to make it absolutely correct but this car's build sheet was lost long ago. Everything else we have (fender tag, window sticker).
When you said the #'s on the tube are the last 3 digits of the axle... do you mean the actual axle or the axle housing? I looked up the parts in the '69 parts catalog and the housing is 2852838 and the axle itself is 2852826. Which is correct? And usually, how far before the Scheduled Build Date should the rear axle assembly be dated? This GTX has a build date of 9-06-68. Thanks!!

69 B body 3.23 SG 11" drums 7290 yoke 489 case is axle # 595
Per my fender tag my Challenger's SPD is A13 (Oct 13th) but the axle dates were pumpkin 10-27, assembly 10-28.... Obviously my car was a little late.. The engine was assembled 10-14 & the original door sticker shows the car was built in Oct 69 so at least for my car there was much lead time.....

742 is probably gonna mean a different color stripe... I know the 489 3.23 SG with the 7290 yoke in 69-70 was three black & an orange stripe... Wish I knew more...
