70 Challenger door rattle/noise etc

70 Challenger door rattle/noise etc - 03/03/12 04:41 PM

When I close my door I hear rattles. Sounds like a couple of screws loose in a soup can.
I have replaced all the plastic window guides/parts and adjusted the glass properly. The glass isn't the problem.
The rattles are from the inside door handle mechanism and the 2 rods going over to the latch mechanism, these 2 rods make noise at the ends where the plastic clips attach.

- What can be done to take up the sloppiness of the handle mechanism?
- Is there something that is suppose to keep tension on the rods so they don't rattle?
- How should I install Hushmat (Dynamat etc.) to give my door more of a thud sound when closing? To the door skin or behind the plastic door panel?

Any experienced advice is much appreciated!

I've owned my convertible since '71 and my doors have rattled since day one. Combine that with orange peeled paint and ill fitting panels they were really shoddy! BUT! Fast as hell!

Sorry I was not much help here.....

Thanks Rusty.........I guess.

I'm determined to quiet down these doors!
I got new Metro door panels and they look good and fit like a glove. You would swear they are NOS.

Any one else ?????

I disagree I have 2 Challengers that I regularly drive and neither one has door rattles. The stock rods frequently had a cloth covering to prevent them from rattling.

I was going to say...it is a Challenger, of course the doors rattle.

But since thats been covered I would try putting some sound deadener in the doors. I know its going to add weight but its also going to quiet them down. I assume you will be sure to look for loose hardware if you havent already.

Yes I have checked for loose hardware, only the rods and the inside handle mechanism are loose.

The rods have their cloth on them but they don't touch anything so they are free to rattle. Are those rods suppose to be clamped in somehow??

I think there is a black clip if memory serves me correctly.
Sort of like the ones for the remote mirrors holding the wire from rubbing.

You must own those 2 Challengers that didn't get recalled by the factory, to install rattlers in the doors

Seriously though every E body 70-74 that I've owned rattled,...SOMEWHERE!, one of the quirks of an E body but great cars none the less

.........You can get new cloth covering (Dynamic Renovation))...OR just put a piece of vac hose over them so they dont rattle against the metal cover or door frame. Sometimes a new plastic clip will tighten up the ends.

Remote mirror cables flapping around?

I think there's a clip to hold the cables on the mirror mounting screws. When you take the mirror off that clips falls to the bottom of the door.

Try cloth taping the cables.

No that clip holds the cable out of the way. I have seen on quite a few doors.

My doors have never rattled and i have had my challenger for 40 years try some compressed air and blow them out

The noise is only when the door is closed.

The primary noise seems to be the rods. They have the cloth sleeves on them. Are the rods suppose to be clamped some way or do they just hang there. Mine just hang there, they don't touch anything except at the ends of course and when I reach in and gently slap them in the middle you hear a rattle/metallic noise from the ends. I have new plastic clips on the ends.

The inside of the doors are clean. The remote mirror is properly secured. All glass plastic hardware is new.

Is there suppose to be anything securing the 2 horizontal rods in the middle area of them?

The rods go against the door shell and theres a piece that has a partial window track slider... no idea what to call it. But the rods fit between this piece and the shell tightly.

Also look for pieces of broken safety glass laying in the bottom. I had several, I guess the previous owners broke window at least once.

I know what you are talking about, a galvanized plate kinda piece bolted to the window side of the inner door shell?

thanks.......that sounds like the winner!!

Yep, theres an opening cut in the door and the rods will show right there between the shell and that piece. Hope that does it
