The fender tag or broadcast sheet will not help. You could go to your DMV or the DMV inthe state where the car was purchased if you know it and see if they can do a VIN vehicle history search? Some states will do this service. There is a fee of course. If the car was bought new in your home state or just titled once before moving there, they will have a record all the titles. I got a report from the state where a car of mine was bought and they had all the titles and vehicle inspections with the mileage of each inspection year in the report. The first title will tell you what dealer sold it.

.............I friend tried this in our state of VA and the DMV said no way. I dont know if they changed there policy lately but I will ask this week. Also some dealers did a DX (dealer exchange) so the dealer address on the orig sticker may not be the dealer that sold the car new. My VA car was sent to Winchester VA. from the factory but was sold in Centervill Dodge, a dealer 50 miles away.

The OP's post is not asking which dealer our cars came from but hiw can he find out where his car came from. Without any paperwork, the only way is if the state where it was originally purchased will do a title search. Of course, he needs to know the State.

I agree, this post went way off coarse, maybe a new post should be started with all this original dealer knowledge/where cars were sold? 2 of my cars i know original dealers but didn't list because that isn't why this post was started...................Don't get me wrong, i really like seeing all these original dealer stickers/badges/papers, lets move it?????

Re: What dealer sold your car ? - 01/22/12 03:10 PM

i tried finding the history of 2 of my cars. i called the dmv's and was told they do not keep the records to any cars more than 10 years back. WI and VA are that way. not to mention VA didn't want to release the names and addresses of previous owners-privacy reasons. i think the best bet is to get as much info from previous owners as you can.

thanks, juan.

You can also search your car for clues of what parts its been in glove box paperwork . Grease stickers or dealer sticker inside glovebox door jambs .Parking decals from work place or school. On this board alone I found 2 current owners of my old cars.I had nothing but a spare set of keys looking for my cars history. The locksmith had initials and phone number .I called to see what area and drove car to cruise night etc events asking about it.Thinking some owner used this local locksmith.I asked on here after I had a town and name .And got a pm and all the cars history came rolling in pictures parts etc.My other was a guy on here was asking about a 70 RT coronet he had .I pmed him the vin of my old car .And struck paydirt..Id say look you got nothing to lose .And documentation from day 1 pictures parts etc to gain

Re: What dealer sold your car ? - 01/22/12 10:40 PM

As long as everyone else is posting theirs, mine was purchased new at A.R. Hull Motors, Staunton, VA in June 17, 1969. I was lucky enough to trace the original owner in 2007. He only kept the car for 13 months but kept the original bill of sale. He gave me the BOS along with a class winner trophy that he won at Cecil County Drag-O-Way in MD back in 1969. It's hard to believe that he kept that stuff all those years but I am glad he did.
