A body axle location

After installing sub-frame connectors and fitting 255 70 x 15 rear tires I notice that the axle does not appear to be installed square with th body, my drivers side has about an inch clearance in front of the tire at the ww opening but the pass side has about 1/16 inch clearance
maybe not even that much.

Is this a common error or am I just really lucky ?

Just eyeballing it from th drivers side it actually looks worse. Anybody else have this problem ?

I had a '74 Duster that had one side 1/4" closer to the front of the opening than the other side. Original panels, etc. I checked the wheelbase and it was equal on both sides; the body was just welded together that way.
First thing you should do is check wheelbase, and take a triangulated measurement to make sure the rearend is square in the car. If it's been a racecar, the rearend housing could also be bent. Make sure the springs have the same ft section length, and that the rearend is centered on the pins in the springs.

one of my friends built a 69 dart drag car--he said the unibody was 3/4 inch out of square---he spaced back one of the rear spring hangers so that it squared up the axle---bob

I will hav to do some measuring this weekend

1/4" wouldnt be much of a suprise but 1" is a little too much.

I did have the springs rebuilt but had not measured them.

The rods on my CalTracs are quite different in length. My car goes straight on the street and at the strip. Go figure. I guess I should measure except if it ain't broke why fix it? My spring are under the rails and the wheels fit the same in the wheel wells. How come you guys always bring up something to make more work for this old man?

the robot welder and jig runs on a loose tolerance---it cant be changed once it is welded together---but if the axle isnt straight it should be straightened--if the k member isnt exactly straight no one notices because the front wheels can be set straight individually---there is enough adjustment in the sheetmetal no one will ever notice on the exterior--larry found his platform wasnt square when he built his own custom coilover front suspension----so he read up on it--then showed us fellow car fiends how loose it could get with the car on a lift and a tape measure---if you are going to race or drive in a spirited manner you dont want your rear end to be looking out to the left or right when you take off---shimming back one front spring hanger isnt that hard---heck if you 4 link the rear making it level and square is job number one---bob
