E-Body tach location (aftermarket) - 11/16/11 01:49 AM

How are you Ebody guys attaching your aftermarket tachs and where? I really don't want to drill holes or scratch the steering column. Pics and ideas are welcome.

don't mind the messy wiring, I had just installed my O2 gauge and was testing before cleaning up the wiring.

Excuse the dust in the picture. The car has not been driven for a couple weeks.

I used an existing hole, for I hate drilling unless I positively have to do so.

I had big obnoxious monster tach with shift light mounted like Mr340's for years.
Got tired of it covering up half the dash so I decided to ditch the setup and mount a small shift light behind one of my dash idiot lights.
Having an RPM activated shift light is awesome, especially with a 4 speed, but I really don't need a big tachometer...I can tell if my car is idling low or high.

I mounted mine similarly to Blues_Cuda, using the dash screw on the left side of my standard gauge cluster. I can't see the light switch, but it's easy enough to feel for.

Is that a one screw bracket? And what make is the tach?

It's an AutoMeter Sport Comp in 3 3/8". Historically, I always had 5" Monster tachs on the previous cars and wanted to get away from that look. This one is mounted in front of the factory tach, so nothing important is covered except for a portion of the right blinker. I can still see it though.

It's a one screw bracket. I initially thought it would not be sturdy enough, but after 5+ years of rough roads and drag strip launches it is holding out just fine.

I did make the black bracket that attaches the tach to the light panel screw hole. It's just a simple aluminum channel that I had lying around. If I remember correctly, the Auto Meter bracket just would not work out for me. It's been a while...cannot remember the details.

I like this particular tach because it kinda matches the factory gauges to some extent and it's a name brand. It's relatively affordable as well. Around $100 if I remember correctly.

I really dislike seeing a Wal-Mart brand tach in a musclecar. There's an orange survivor Hemi Cuda down the road from me that is ultra cool, but the dime store tach really knocks it down a few nothces.

Re: E-Body tach location (aftermarket) - 11/18/11 03:00 AM

I mounted my AutoMeter tach on the column. I just used 2 radiator clamps screwed together and some foam between the column and the clamp for friction and to protect the column.

I also used some tissue on the back of the tach so that the tach wouldn't mar the face of the factory tach in case it rubbed it.

I have had the tach mounted like this for years with no problems.

Re: E-Body tach location (aftermarket) - 11/20/11 07:23 PM

i didnt want to drill any holes in my dash and just flat dont care for the look of putting a gage in front of other gages or hanginh off steering column
that being said i took a peice of 1" wide flat stock bout 10" long or so
bent it like a candy cane the short side up mounted my 5"monster tach on it
long side is held to the bottom side of dash where the light bar is
has nice bend that fits close to the pad but never touches it
never have to look down at the tach
can easy be removed if need be ,no repaint the column,no covering up other gages

I removed the center speaker grill, and fab'ed up a piece of wood to replace it, and painted it black. Makes for a nice solid platform to mount several gauges that are easy to see.

you can bend it to get bracket as snug as ya want to the dash but you get the ideal

Re: E-Body tach location (aftermarket) - 11/26/11 03:59 AM

I don't see the harm of covering the factory tach with an aftermarket one. It's not like the factory tach is close to being accurate in the first place.

Re: E-Body tach location (aftermarket) - 11/26/11 04:10 AM

to me it just makes it cluttered yes
factory tach prob not the most accurate

Re: E-Body tach location (aftermarket) - 11/26/11 05:08 AM

How close is your tach going to be to the rearview mirror? That shift light might make it awfully close.
