Sure Grip Additive. How much? - 11/09/11 05:22 PM

Getting ready to swap center sections in my 8 3/4 rear. I forget how much Sure Grip additive to add. It's either 1 or 2 4oz bottles. Can someone jog my memory. Thanks in advance.

the least you can get away with without chattering or popping, the additive is actually not great for the diff fluid.

Wasn't there a FORD additive that someone here suggested a few months back? I seem to recall it being a good product but had a terrible stench to it.

If you use the Lucas diff gear oil, it already has the additive in it, no need to purchase/add the additive

My Uncle is a service manager for a Ford dealer. He calls it "skunk piss".

Those in the know seem to agree that the Ford stuff is the best stuff out there. It stinks like nothing else, though. I recently put (2) bottles into my 8-3/4 with a rebuilt Eaton powerlock.

Sorta off-topic, but.....
Why would a CONE type differential need a friction modifier? It makes sense in a clutch type unit, but a cone diff is always metal to metal. What about a Detroit Locker? Thats another mechanical/ratchet type with no sliding parts: Its either locked OR open....

Who said anything about a cone unit?

Both clutch and cone differentials must SLIP when the vehcile turns. Because of this, they both require friction modifier additive.

An open (standard), locker (ratchet) or worm gear (torque senstive) differential does not require the additive because their internals do not slip.

Is there a part # or special name for the stuff from Ford?

I remember Dennis telling me the name of the aftermarket stuff was "something punch"

So, a 4 ounce bottle of the stuff mixed in for a new/rebuilt Power Lock?
