super trap mufflers?

super trap mufflers? - 10/27/11 02:44 PM

got to see a nice yellow/black Gremlin today. nice 304 SB with 3 on the floor.

had manifolds with 2" head pipes and turned out in front of rear wheels. i thought it had chrome echo tips but looking a little closer it had the supertrap mufflers, with the stacked plates/defusers(I think thats what its called?)

that thing sounded real good when he got on it leaveing

anybody else run a set of them?, kinda thought I might give them a try on my 440 truck till the headers go on it,it has the mannys with 2" pipes but will need more pipe.

I was going to run the headers with glass packes bolted to them and some pipes for turn outs in front of the rear wheels, but could just run headers with pipe and the supertraps sticking out a little in front of the tires.

what are some pros and cons on them?

the gremlin guys said they are tunable and he runs this many on the street and that many or open on the strip.

are the worth the effort to run them on a street truck?

thanks for opinions

I had them on a 69 roadrunner i owned about 10 years ago. They were the only mufflers from straight pipes. The hassle of swapping discs when you wanted louder or quieter was no fun after the allen head screws stripped out or rusted in place. Also they just did not look good on a pretty much stock car.

We have used them on dirt bikes for years (they are considered old tech now) but I never even knew they made them for cars. I wouldn't bother with them for the reasons Stu mentioned.

once I got the sound I like,I would not be adjusting them.

just something differant for street duty and i think they would work with the look of my 88 440 truck.

45* angle in front of rear wheels

headers and straight pipes with a set of super traps

defferant indeed

I've run them also...Been a few years back but they sounded/looked great on the modified vehicle they were on...There were a few different end caps and extra diffusors available at the time I ran them...Also had choices on the overall length/diameter IIRC...I pretty much added the amount of plates I wanted and did'nt really fool with it after that...They held up great even after a few years of service....

Hey Scratchy,, I had them on my 71 RR. Loved them. Had 12 discs on each side. Great sounding. You can repack them when they burn out. If I was you Id notch the roll pan and run them out the back. With your lowered truck theres not a lot of clearance for the exhaust pipe to go under the frame and not drag on speedy bumps..

yea shorty i have thought about out the back. but with the mono leafs/lift bars it sit real low. the frame is about 3-4 inches off the axle tube and that spreds the shocks out wide.

that takes up the room where a pipe would go to around the outside of the shock. over the middle is a very tight clearance for 2 pipes also

I just had to grind clearance on the frame cross rail for the air shocks last weekend, the stock angle cut for the shock needed clearanced for the bigger shock body.

right now its sitting jacked up in the rear at max lift the shocks give. now if I drive up on some ramps in front,i should be able to get my fat azz under the truck and have room to swap the tranz out asap

sux to have to add airshocks to get under the truck..no?

I want to run the headers from kenworthgoose when the pipes get built,I also want them short and be able to unbolt them from the headers and hangers to be remove out from under the truck for work clearance.

so I was thinking the headers straight pipes with a 90* turn and hang them in front of the rear tire. header-pipe-supertrap x 2

after seeing the price 400-500 bones for a pair, may just go with some hookers or glass packs

but then again,i didnt think I would have 500 bones in just the fuel plumbing either

they have some nice short black ones that 18"L 3"ID 4" case tapperd to 5" with 12 disc that I really like

so far they are what I like/want but may have to go with what the budget dictates

the black ones are the ones that I had. If I remember right they were around 100.00 eack 30 years ago..

you could make a homemade set.. cut a glasspack in half, cap the end, drill and tap the 6 screw holes and put on the guard, discs and cap . about half the price of a factory set.

I have them on my 1978 Ramcharger w/440. Mine is a lifted 4x4. Sound great with headers, pipes then 45 degree into the SuperTrapps. Using 12 diffuser discs on a warmed over 440.

Hello! I used them on a ProStreet Camaro (I know, I've seen the light!) I built. I did modify the tail pan so they'd fit closer. They did have s nice sound. I had them on for about 10 years with no issues. Jeff

They're really not my thing but what I like about them is if you clamp them on or weld on tabs and bolt them to the pipe you can uncork your exhaust very quickly.

Back about 15 years ago when 4" flowmasters were the rage one of my friends rigged up some reducers and stuck 2.5" supertraps on the end of his pipes to drive around on the street without getting the attention of every cop in the county.
