400 Flywheel

400 Flywheel - 10/06/08 02:12 PM

I have a 1972 400 and I want to put it in my Fury with a 4 speed Tranny ....I believe the 400 is externally balanced is there a specific flywheel for a 400 or do I need to just get one balanced?

The 400/440 cast crank share the same flywheel. Give us a call, we can balance one for you.

Balancer on front of engine should say Cast Crank Only or something like that on it.

I thought there was a template in the archives for drilling a neutral flywheel, so it will work

Be sure you have a cast crank before you look for a flywheel.
one of my buddies has a factory 400 cu.in. 4 speed mudder truck with a factory steel crank. I've been told they used the steel 383 cranks for this purpose until they were used up.

is not on 400 on a 440 yes

Really, I thought they would have used the same? If not, I think 440source.com has as nice page showing off all the factory big block balancers.

#3614374, used on 400's with external balance cast cranks, which can usually be found in a passenger car and/or automatic trans application (applications with 400 engines and manual transmission applications used forged cranks.) It measures 7 1/4" diameter by about 7/8" wide. Although it is similar to the "six pack" dampers above, the weight on these is much thicker, and more closely resembles the weights on the cast crank 440 models below, even though the ring thickness is similar to an internal balance damper. One easy way to identify these (and not confuse them with six pack models) is the small half circle that is cut into one side of the counterweight. This is visible in the picture above at about the 3 o'clock position. This is the only damper that will have this small cut.

There is but that is a PRECISE operation , ESPECIALLY if someone is doing it AFTER an engine was balanced using something else . How many people have a rotary table for thier HOME drill press .... don't all stand up at once

sorry the highjack, but being the diff balancer dampeners came out to float!!!

are the PULLEYS to both dampeners diff ?

I mean of a 4 grooves pulley to cast assembly is the same than a 4 grooves pulley to forged assembly ?

pulleys are neutral and not balancer specific EXCEPT for the bolt circle change from asymmetric to symmetric around 1971 , or was it 1970 ??? ...

Modern devices have spoiled creativity, a protractor and 12-inch scale would do the job equally well.

ok, fine but I mean if because the diff thickness of balancer dampeners makes some differences on pulley deep, not really because some balancing on pulley.

and doing it from the diagram or any other method with care at home, and it will be AT LEAST as close as the factory balance was, AND as good as a reman torque converter from a rebuilder who welded the weights on himself.
