Steering column conversion question - 10/13/11 05:43 PM

I am in the process of converting a steering column in a 1970 super bee from a column shift to floor shift. The owner supplied my with the proper shell for the column but i cannot determine where the key release spring needs to hook onto....

If anyone knows where i need to attach this spring too, or if anyone has an exploded view diagram of a column it would be appreciated.

Thanks!

My recall on doing the same a couple years ago was that I was confused too. I need to brain storm on what I did. I remember putting it back together with the spring attached to that stud and seeing where it could hook and spring back. Trial and error, from what I remember.

as previously said, that is not the correct sleeve, but that spring should attach to the tube that it slips over. But, being a 70 tube, will probably not have the hole for the spring.

FWIW on mine I just ground down the little locking tab so I don't have to flick that lever to take the key out. Never understood what the point of that was.

The point is so if you need to switch the ignition off for say a stuck throttle the engine shuts off easily but to move the key further which will lock the steering you need to perform the extra step of rotating the collar...

Perfect. This at least points me in the right direction. Any chance anyone has a column apart and can take a picture of the hole in the column tube? lol
