BB Reluctor rotation

BB Reluctor rotation - 10/12/11 12:12 AM

I realized while gapping my reluctor pickup the other day that the reluctor itself spins counter clockwise (this is correct for a 440), but there is an arrow cast into it that indicates a clockwise rotation.

Is this anything to be alarmed about or something that needs to be corrected? Could this have any effect on idle quality?

Thanks,

Pat

If I remember correctly, the other side of the will have the arrow for the other (correct) direction. You should check the rotor phasing to make sure it is appropriate. There are lots of posts on this in the archive. If the rotor phasing is off, it can affect how well the engine runs.

There are two roll pin grooves on the inside diameter of the reluctor: one for CCW rotation distributors (such as 440 engines) and one for CW distributors (such as 340 engines). The groove closest to the arrow is for CW distributors. The roll pin on your 440 distributor should be in the other groove.

Having said that, it's still not a bad idea to check phasing, even if the roll pin is in the correct groove.

What RobbMc said and vac advance if used will shift rotor phasing CW (BB) from the at rest no vacuum location and with eng off I would check the pickup gap as you pull the vac can thru it's travel with a Mityvac vacuum pump while moving the housing to keep the magnet dead on with the tooth and echlin offers a rotor with the tip .060" longer EDIT Echlin MO-3000
