Oil pan removal in an A-body? - 09/26/11 04:21 AM

I've put new main bearings in both a '73 C-body (dropped the drag link) and a '98 Ram (too easy)with the engine still in the vehicle.... now I need a new oil pan gasket on a '71 318 Dart.

Anyone here who's done it?

I dropped the pan on the 340 in my GTS many years ago. Unbolt the motor mounts and raise the engine (I seem to recall putting a 2x4 under each mount). I cannot remember if I undid the pitman arm and idler arm or not, but probably.

Same here , lift the engine and I remember pulling the centerlink .

same here I did it in the 68Dart with a 73 k frame, droped the header on both sides and pull pass side all the way out, then the whole tie rod/center linke came out, then raised engine, droped oil pump/pick up into the pan, removed pan.I may even had to roll the throws on the crank to walk it out.

header sux on A-bodys and so does the R&R of the oil pans

I would pull the motor if it were mine, done it many of times.

You can leave the hood on and the radiator in it too, I unbolt the exhaust and tie it back to the shocks, drop the starter, pull the plugs and oil filter, pull the harmonic balancer and dist, unbolt the converter, stick a floor jack under the trans then unbolt the motor from the trans and the mounts, after that the motor comes straight up and out.

If you have access to a lift I might try doing it in the car but I can usually have the motor out in 45min or so the other way.
