Rear axle seal installation Qs - 09/06/11 12:34 PM

Hi,

i've run into problems when installing my rear axles seals (inner). They seem to be too big to fit into the axle ... or am i doing something wrong? How do you install your rear axles seals?

Thanks for your help!

You have to drive them in and must be driven in to the lip stop machined into the housing. They also must be driven in square with the housing or they will leak. Hear is what Iuse. It is made for the job.

for 8&3/4's there's an app that's a bit 2 big, they wont even start to go in the housing. Been awhile/dont have #'s 4 you

for most 8 3/4 applications for the inner seals are #2404215 same as 2881185 mopar or 8695S aftermarket. what is the number off the old seal?

Yeah you'd think the inner seal # would b the same 4 all (8&3/4) so I may have been handed one 4 a diff app (been several years ago) but the OD was too big (close though) to even get started

Cheap easy installer.Get a piece of PCV thats close to the seal size. Then just drive them in with it.Cost a few bucks and they are square and even in the housing.Rocky

now it's all settled. got a second pair of seals that went in with no problems - seems like the first pair i had wre just too big.

found i nice way to drive them in btw.:

take one of the old seals and cut it in one place with an angle grinder so that it can compress a little bit. then take a piece of 2.5" pipe and slide the old and cut bearing over the pipe - now you have a perfect tool to drive in the new seals!

i believe he used the old seal on the end of a pipe as the driver for the new seal, just cut so it is able to be compressed a bit.
