What are my choices for 273 intake manifold

What are my choices for 273 intake manifold - 08/21/11 05:08 AM

Looking to turn my 2brl 273 into a 4brl. What intake manifold works best with a 4 speed? Mild engine build. I see 318-360 intakes all over. Will those intakes fit a 273 or? Thanks

64-66 use their own manifold, I think offenhauser made one and I think there is a dual quad weiand intake and the stock intake.

67-69 can use any run of the mill 318 360 340 intake, the larger ones litke the performer RPM or LD340 have some port mismatch but no big deal on a stockish engine. The performer or street dominator fit good on the later ones.

64-65 use a different intake, but it's only the bolt holes that are different (smaller, slightly different angle). The ports are 318-sized, but you can use a 340/360 port intake with decent results.

So would you just drill the angle into intake then? decent meaning...stock motor...ok results...build the 273, then you can use the intake more for what it was designed for? If it's possible, I would rather choose an intake than to be limited to a couple. How much would I have to modify each hole roughly?

LD4B would have the smaller ports to match the heads

are you locked into the 273 head? if not a set of the 318 #302 heads would be a great upgrade and open up the intake choise.

small ports, swirl port fast burn closed chamber, same valve size as 273

For a 65 - 273 with stock heads, you'd need an Edelbrock D4B. If you use 66 or later heads, then the LD4B is what you need. They are for the 273 and 318 engines.

The stock iron single plane unit looks like a poor choice but it WORKS great and makes plenty of TQ despite the looks of it--they are cheap when you find one and.. no hood clearance issues. Even on a warmed up 273 they do way better than you think.

I'm willing to change heads. What are the exact benefits and how much possible horsepower we talking? Or would this be a small benefit with better choices of intakes? I'm going to try and do some research. Thanks

#308 heads sound enticing...better flow...1.88 1.60s..maybe mill them .20=.40? Thoughts anyone?

Can you even have 1.88 valves with out notching or modifying the block?

you have said that you are going to change the cam, if not I would stick with the stock single plane or the one that came of the D stock models. I would stick with tthe stock heads if you do not plan on putting a larger cam in

The D-dart used the same intake as the other 4bbls.

308 heads are a terrible option as compression will be really bad like mabey 6.5 to one. The valves will need notching and it will have a ton of crevice volume and no quench at all. The big ports will keep the velocity too low for any low speed performance.

The best head for a 273 is the 920 heads from 67 273 and 318s only, you can use what ever normal SB intake you want and they have the smallest chambers, valves that fit without notches, more flow than the 302 head with out being too much like the 360 heads.

The D-Darts had 920 heads, cast iron intake (same one that was used on the 273-235HP engine), a special 750 Holly carb, 1/2" spacer-apapter. They ran high 12's, low 13's back in the day.

I want to pull the engine out of my D/Dart and will use a 273 1967 2-barrel engine with 920 heads, an Edelbrock LD4B, and an MP 4452761 cam. I'm going to use the D/Dart 4160 - 3778 Holley carb.

Right now the engine idles worth crap with the cam that's in it. I believe it's a higher lift cam then what came in the car. I was told it has mushroom lifters in it. We'll see...............

Good luck with your build!!! No matter what people might say about the 273, it's a great little engine.

Ok cool, all this info gives me an idea of what I want to do. I used to be into racing and street cars but now I just want a slightly custom....but mainly original 65 cuda 273 4 speed. In fact, I just bought another 4 speed 65 cuda today, it is in better shape and came with a 8 3/4 rearend! Lady said it was a 6cyl 4 speed car with an auto put in...got there it was a 273 car and big rear end and dual exhaust...hmmmmm I think the other car will be cut up most likely The car I was talking about when this post started has had a lot of cutting done to it in the back end....I was gonna save it...but I don't know too many people willing to save this car so..... I will have a parts car!
