Wheel Vintiques repro steel wheel users.... - 08/16/11 05:19 PM

Did you have to blast the wheels to paint them or were you able to scuff the finish & repaint?

Re: Wheel Vintiques repro steel wheel users.... - 08/16/11 05:26 PM

Scuffed and repainted. I advise you to check them out on a balancer BEFORE wasting the money and effort on paint. DAMHIK

I've done 3 or 4 sets of the so called powder coated correct colored rallyes.
And on every one, all i've done is lightly glass bead, primer and repaint. never had an issue yet

Good luck in getting a true 15x7 trim ring to fit .With the latest set of wheels I got from WV {one year ago}via Summit the exterior off set is off .The b/s is 4.25" but with the new hoops being slightly narrower the trim won`t set down enought to cath and hits on the centre of wheel . Both had to go back with no comment from WV as to why ????

Scuff em with red scotchbright pad and paint them. I didn't even use primer.

No trim rings for these...they will be body colored with dog dish caps only...

For the life of me, I can't figure out why someone would pay WV for stock steel wheels when there are piles of them in junkyards and used wheel & tire yards all across the country for $15-$20 a pop.

What an I missing??

Easy; not in a 15" x 7" stockish appearing steelie. I got some 15" x 6 1/2" station wagon wheels but the 15" x 7" were only the ultra rare and expensive "450" wheels IIRC.

I haven't seen a 10X15" one in a junk yard forever it seems.

True....my next question....

15x7's or 15x8's?

I would be using 255/60/15 tires

Dunno. My car sits outside, so they rusted like a shipwreck on a reef. Good luck with yours though.

You know they need to be painted before use, right?
They come with a real nice looking coating but there are stickers on all the wheels warning you to paint them before use. I have four of them on my 71 for 5 years now and no rust yet.

Re: Wheel Vintiques repro steel wheel users.... - 08/16/11 08:51 PM

What stickers ?

They suck - they rusted , OK ? I report the truth, perhaps the truth is better now ?

Re: Wheel Vintiques repro steel wheel users.... - 08/16/11 08:57 PM

BTW, I've had these wheels for 9 years - yours 5 years , things are looking up; they have improved 'em !

Re: Wheel Vintiques repro steel wheel users.... - 08/16/11 09:54 PM

Car is garaged so hopefully no rust!
Posted By: IronWolf

Re: Wheel Vintiques repro steel wheel users.... - 08/16/11 10:16 PM

Good for you !

I hope I can afford a garage in the future - in the meantime, I'll avoid the " Insto Rusto Specials" from Wheel Vintiques !!

PS Why is it that "oceanic" locations in California have little rust issues, yet anything East of the Mississippi rusts like a tin can ?
Ya oughta read "Hemmings" - it's hilarious . Apparently , most cars for sale in that mag originated in California. Heh, Heh, Heh.

Did you paint yours when they were new?

Re: Wheel Vintiques repro steel wheel users.... - 08/16/11 10:47 PM

I scuffed and painted mine. The great part is I ordered a 15x10 with the backspace to fit my car! bad news is I sent three back, 2 were not round and one had a giant weld bead the made the main hoop all the way across the wheel. The customer service was smart mouth to say the least. I ran the rim on a spin balancer machine with a dial indicator and two were out over a 1/4 inch. Would you feel it? not sure and I didn't want to find out. I ordered them from summit for the cheap shipping.

Chris,
are you losing the aluminum rims?
Posted By: IronWolf

Re: Wheel Vintiques repro steel wheel users.... - 08/16/11 11:10 PM

No, I didn't paint them, and no, I wasn't "warned". They got my money, and they rusted. So much for being a pioneer. California ain't Florida, and I don't want to hear "It worked in the Store" crap. The wheels suck.

No but I will be losing the Road Wheels. I'm using the Redline radials on the steel wheels.

Chris the car is going to look killer with them on there .
With my My wheels, I just scuffed and painted them NO issues at all, also had NO issues when I had the tires mounted and balanced. Can't wait to see it when done. Going with the poverty caps also?

Re: Wheel Vintiques repro steel wheel users.... - 08/17/11 12:29 AM

I had a hard time getting the dog dish caps to snap on, but I had no issue with the caps fitting on the factory rims.

Yea Jeff...gonna go with the redline caps! Right now I have 9 caps (4 more coming in the mail) to pick the best 4. I already polished up a few & I think they came out cool. Now to repaint them.......

.....or just say the heck with them & buy the repro set!

PS---check your PM!

Are you kidding me? I have 15x7 steelies on the back of my Satellite. I had to decide on the best (2) out of a pile of at least (50) when I grabbed them at a used tire & wheel shop in Tacoma a few years ago. Then last year I grabbed another set to mount my ET Streets on. $20 a pop, more of them in the yard than I could care to count. 15x7's are like Camaro's around here. You guys aren't looking hard enough (or at all?)

In my situation, there arent many junk yards near me at all...the ones that are only have late model stuff.
Even if I did find a set I would have to spend $$ to get them blasted etc. At $92 each it is well worth the less aggravation to get a fresh set IMHO
To those that have access to "piles" of 15x7's and sand blasters etc

this is very true. in some areas older stuff doesn't exist in junkyards. sometimes its just easier, and doesn't cost that much more in total, to buy new. used swap meet parts are too expensive and aren't worth the hassle to refinish.

Re: Wheel Vintiques repro steel wheel users.... - 08/18/11 09:33 PM

Dave,
Where were your wheels out of balance or out of round?
I mounted these WV 10" wide wheels in my balancer today.
When spinning them they look out of round because of the stamping I think. But when I put my dial indicator on them the run out is about .001". That's plenty good in my book. As far as balance they are out .2 tenths on one side and 4 tenths on the outside, which don't concern me really. Just wondering where your's was out?

Here's the stickers warning you to paint them before using. The water based coating on them sure is nice looking and I could see why guys would run em without paint.

Re: Wheel Vintiques repro steel wheel users.... - 08/18/11 10:24 PM

both, I believe; but that was 4 years ago..... All I remember for sure is that I have two big honkin weights on three wheels and one of them still couldn't be properly balanced.

sorry; wish I had more scientific data for you.

I hear you...were the tires mounted when they needed ton's of weight?

I have returned tires now that needed too much weight to balance out.
