Flywheel Question

Flywheel Question - 08/01/11 03:08 PM

I have the stock flywheel that was in my cuda when it was a 273. I have built a 416 stroker for it and dumped the 273. Can I use the stock flywheel with the 416 or should I get a new one?

Doesn't a 273 use a small clutch? Like 9 or 10 inches. If so then it won't like your stroker very much.

The flywheel I have is 10.5" clutch - I measured it yesterday.

The 273 4-spd combo was not original to the car.

As long as both are neutral balance yes you can use it BUT is the flywheel a stock cast unit ? If so I'd replace it with a new billet wheel for safety sake.

Yes, it is a stock cast unit. Thanks, John!

To go absolutely the cheapest you could use a 10.95" pressure plate and disk with that wheel. It's a stroker, no need to rev it to the trees. But if you think you will, buy a SEMA spec wheel and be safe. And if you do don't go heavier than stock, your big engine doesn't need it.

Thanks. The car will mainly be street driven, so I don't see it pulling too many high rpms on a regular basis.

invest in a billet wheel.
street has nothing to do with rpm.

Billet flywheels are cheap these days. PRW has some really nice Mopar flywheels and they are not very expensive. I have both a 6 bolt and a 8 bolt version.

I just spent 5 minutes looking at the PRW website and couldn't find a Mopar billet wheel.

However, 440Source has'em for $99.00. At that price don't mess around with a 40-year-old cast wheel. No matter what.

PS: Thanks, Andy, I was stuck in the $400+ flywheel time warp.

Re: Flywheel Question - 08/03/11 02:35 AM

damn $99?! someone needs to make me one of these but with the 5.9L magnum balance to them!

$150 for a stock magnum cast flywheel. $300-350 for a billet 5.9L flywheel.

edit: in a 143 tooth wheel....I saw the 440 source wheels, and they're 130 toothers.

Occasionally Mcleod sells overstock flywheels for a good price. They list them on their forum and on Ebay http://stores.ebay.com/McLeod-Racing-Clutches?_trksid=p4340.l2563 and Racing Junk http://www.racingjunk.com/dealers/McLeod_Racing?page=1. I paid $200 for a 130 tooth aluminum wheel. The steel ones were $120. When I bought mine they had a good assortment of Mopar flywheels for sale cheap. Actually I called to ask a question about them and bought it direct from the tech dept. They are not showing any Mopar wheels right now but I would call the tech line and ask if they have any they want to clear out. Do not call the sales line. They will tell you to buy it from Summit for almost three times the money.
