what would you do?? - 09/29/08 12:15 AM

I have an 86 Aries with only 38.000 miles, when i bought it about 6 months ago It had 32.000 miles, the original motor blew up at 36.000 miles,i put in a good motor with 84.000 miles, and everything was fine till today,It will not hold coolant, and It Is going somewhere, not out the exhaust, the oil looks good(nothing milky)
and nothing on the driveway, but everytime i drive it now the temp guage goes up to the max, then comes down,i replaces the thermostat, and coolant temp switch again, but after It cools down, the radiator Is 1/2 empty, and the overflow Is only 1/2 full, but i see bubbles in the overflow after about 15 minutes of idling.

any ideas?

all the plugs look like new,I replaced them when the motor was installed

This Is the same thing that happened with the original motor,at least this one still runs for now,the car Is like new, inside and out,but but I have over $1.500 in It now!book value is $900.00
per KBB I was going to scrap It last time(I was very %^$& at It then),but found the other 86 Aries for the motor, but my car Is too nice to dump
Into a scrap yard, but i'm sure nobody will ever want it,so what should i do?????

Hey Russ, if its not in the oil or on the ground, its in one or two of the holes. If it were mine, I would blockseal it. The moroso ceramic seal works well if you have the time to let it sit long enough. Its a cheap fix to an expensive problem..

If the motor was replaced recently and you are finding "no" coolant leaking or blowing out the tail pipe, it might be possible you have an air pocket in the coolant system including the heater core. Before pulling the head, maybe try to bypass the heater core, check the core for blockage, verify no heater hoses are vise versa etc. Also, not knowing the H2O pumps condition you may want to toss one in to rule that out. Who knows, if the pump was on the engine and it sat for a period of time, the fins may be deteriated and can't blow the system to specs.
Good luck !!

did all that too,if this ceramic stuff doesn't work,i'll probably take It to a swap meet that's going on this weekend, and sell It with a notation that It has a cooling system problem

A friend of mine said to drain the cooling system, flush It good, fill It back with just water, then ad a jar of liquid glass, and let It run for an hr and let It set for 24hrs,then drain and refill with coolant
Said he did that with a slant 6,and was good for 3 years

After doing them 7 times over the years on 3 cars its the head gasket , not a easy job but one that takes a average guy all of a saturday to do. Check and make sure the head don't need done I didn't and tore it apart it cost me over $500 as the guides were junk. next time to the heap it goes

Agreed.

Mopar came out with an improved head gasket for the 2.2L.

If you can't find one , just junk the car. I replaced two (2) - never again.

Ok Mark

Put a new radiator and cap in it,bled It too,and a fan switch, drove it over 150 miles today without no problems,go figure
Didn't put the liquid glass In It either

Never went above 190 degrees on the guage with the A/C going. And It was 88 here today

The old radiator was seeping out the bottom, and full of red goop, flushed It all out,new radiator/cap,etc,good to go so far

I think It's fixed

I can,t see getting rid of a 36thou mile used car that has,nt been butchered by monkeys. I look at spending money on it as car pmts every once in a while, not monthly.
