louver back window moulding - 09/24/08 03:50 AM

What color black is the moulding around the back window for a e-body louver set?

The textured moulding used around the back window was close to a semi-flat to satin black...Most originals I've seen fade to a flat black...I used a semi-flat epoxy on mine to freshen them up... Keep in mind not all louvered cars recieved the textured moulding...

can you show or explain how to get the texture on the moulding , like in your picture?

Re: louver back window moulding - 09/25/08 04:18 PM

The texture is pressed, or embossed into the trim, it is not a "paint technique".......

BTW I see you have another question posted about Challenger rear glass, I've only seen the textured moldings on Barracuda/Cuda & I have two friends with Challengers that are coded for Louvers..

I agree, I've never seen a challenger with the textured rear window trim either.

On the louvered cudas that did Not receive the textured trim, was the trim left shiny, or also painted black?

This was a Cuda thing so you would not see it on Challengers. However for both cars if you ordered a vinyl top with the louvers it had to be black.

.....I currently have a set of both, the cuda ones are embossed, they were available on Louvered equipped cars, and Grand Coupes in 70-1

the Challenger set That I have are just smooth, but painted with organsol, the surface underneath is dull, not polished

I did see some of that textured rear window trim on a gran coupe without louvers once.

Why do only certain gran coupes have it? Is it only ones with black vinyl tops? Which ones were supposed to have it? It's a pretty rare find.

Yes, only the Gran Coupes with a black vinyl top recieved the textured moulding...It took me a while to figure that one out years ago when I was investigating the trim as to why I had it and the B-5 white vinyl topped Gran Coupe my buddy had did'nt...On a side note, the textured trim is'nt stainless and seems more like a stamped aluminum....It's very easy to bend if you're not careful with the handling and install....I know I have an extra set also and I have'nt seen it for a while...I'll have to locate it and snap some pics from the backside.....So...Am I reading this right...The challenger could have had an organisol painted back glass trim with the rear window louvers ?????

That is what Mike mentioned, the two cars I'm familar with both have normal polished stainless & Ken's comment is actually pertaining to the vinyl top itself, always black if you got louvers, no white, no green, no Gator Grain....Black....Which the way it was written in the salesmans guide lead allot of dealers to believe you couldn't get louvers with any vinyl top....

I saw some black challenger rear window trim in a junkyard about 9 months ago. I thought about rear louvers, but wasn't sure if it was original or someone had just painted it.

At what point in production were louvers available?

before the louvers were available, did gran coupes with black tops get regular rear window trim?

so let me get this strait, all challengers with window louvers received the black window trim? this would be nice to know, because our TA is suppose to have the louvers.

Tav, I'm thinking the gran coupes had it from the beginning...Mine has an SPD of 9-11-69...

That is what Mike mentioned,

Randy......about 3 decades of parting out E bodies, probally a few hundred cars?......(between me and Chet Greenwood, we probally culled quite a few hundred E bodies on the east coast!).....I use to avg 3 cars a month, every month, year after year... not counting the ones in salvage yards that I stripped.....generally ALMOST all of the black vinyal topped 70-1 Grand Coupes had black textured trim, ...not all though........rear window louvered cars were SCARCE!.....usally 99 percent of the time the louvers were gone, or totaly trashed,.....I've only had 2 70 Challengers(parts cars) that were equipped with black vinyl tops and had rear window louvers, although the louvers were "swiped" from both cars, their trim was intact,.....black organsol painted, I stripped one set to refinish for my T/A,.....just raw stainless, no polished finish, seeing that I have 2 sets, the same, I would assume this is how the factory may have finished some cars?....if not all?...It's just like when you see a E body 3 spoke woodgrain steering wheel with a half rim horn ring?......the same with the Challenger black rear window trim......may have been an early option, or treatment later dropped?.......I didn't document the cars

Mike
I'm not saying Chrysler didn't paint some organsol, I'm saying the two Challengers I know of coded for Louvers don't have the trim so certainly not all Louver equipt cars got black trim.. BTW I agree the textred trim is fairly common...As odd ball E body parts go that is..

Re: louver back window moulding - 09/27/08 02:03 AM

I agree with ya Randy as far as weird options on E bodies,....seems the early 70 production cars were either equipped with oddball stuff, or a lack of what would become common.......early 71 Cars seemed to suffer an identity crisis, haveing sometimes a mix of left over 70 parts installed .....but E bodies rule! ....no question!

Mike,

Did you ever go to a guy's body shop in Worcester owned by a guy named Wayne (IIRC)? He had a persnal Mopar salvage yard in the back of the shop with a bunch or real hi-po cars for parts! Chet beat me to a '70 340 4-spd FJ5 louver/go wing car that showed up one weekend. I got the lid from the car and got the wing off of Chet. I have pics of the car and it clearly shows regular stainless moldings. Chet cut the 4-spd hump out and went right through the tran X-member! A real shame, ended up a parts car because the roof was cut for a sunroof It was a very clean original paint car, but this was around '91, and 340 cars had no real value at the time
