96 Dodge Ram Won't Start - 06/21/11 02:23 AM

THis is a question froma friend of mine......

1996 Dodge Ram, 360 4x4, he was driving down the driveway, was running rough. Decided to blip the throttle to clear it out, truck died. Wouldn't restart. It cranks with good spark, will start to fire on ether. I think fuel pump, but he replaced it 2 years ago.
Any ideas?

Check fuel pressure and injector pulse.

For sure, check your pressure. It should be in the 50-60 range. You can also check the relay in the PDC by swapping with one of the others. Most of the relays in the PDC are the same. See what happens. Look under the cab on the lh side behind the front fender liner. There is a connecter there that has the pump wiring in it. It may have loosened up. Had that happen once. If you end up replacing the pump, replace the relay too. If the relay is marginal, it will take out the pump due to lack of voltage. Another thing to watch out for is if it ran out of fuel. If it runs out of fuel, which also cools and lubes the pump, it will wipe it out.

A 1996 Ram will die and not start if the battery is weak. My ran bad, tough to start, would die. I replaced the battery because it was 6 yrs old and it ran fine.

They are known for this.

I doubt its the batt as he states it cranks but wont start.I agree swap the relays. But if sounds like the pump may be bad. They will usually start on ether though. What pump did you replace it with?I hope not Airtex. We used Bosch or factory at the shop. Then again I did have a couple of new factory pumps that were bad right out of the box.Check the fuel pressure as stated.Rocky
