Compression Ring, which is what?

Compression Ring, which is what? - 04/24/11 03:57 PM

I bought Piston Rings Set for my 383. There are two 5/64 Compression Ring, they look exactly the same. How do I know which one go on Top or it does not matter? Thanks a lot!

Here the pics:

If they didn't come with an "Instruction" sheet, simply go to their website. Get it wrong and you will regret it...

I found the little Dot marked on rings. I have another question

What exactly happens if you mix up the compression rings? I mean the 1st ring go to second groove and 2nd ring go to top groove(Assume both ring have right direction but wrong position-Dot marked and the Dot toward the top of piston)

Have anyone tried this with their Toy see what happen?

Or anyone know Piston Rings structure, can you explain what will happen if we mix up those compress rings?

If that's the box they came in....the flaps on the box should be labeled top ring/second ring, etc. but now you took them out so...refer to previous posts

You don't want to swap the top and second rings , not sure if it's ok to do something like that with a cheap set of cast rings , but the other ring sets , moly , ductile , etc , the top ring is many times a different material and the shape of it may be somewhat different.

Most rings that are moly rings are reverse torsion rings which when installed in opposite locations will give you very low to no compression. Don't wanna do that.

I believe there are reason for not mixing up those rings but I accidentally broke one top ring(install by hand). I have one 2nd ring, use but in great condition, Im thinking of just replace it for top ring, hope it work!

the ring design is not the same for top and 2nd rings. The second ring is not a compression ring and is not shaped to seal well. It's an oil scraper. IIRC, the top ring will not have a bevel at all, just a dot or mark. the second ring will have a bevel and may not have a dot at all.

Its hit and miss but bevel up if no ID dot and ductile or moly etc all have noticeably different top rings.

Id bet you can get away with using a 2nd ring in the top on what appear to be cheap cast 5/64 rings you have there.

Look close I bet they arent even beveled, as referenced in almost all ring manufacturers destructions.

aasahhhhh my old employer Sealed Power. the PIP always goes UP. dont mix the rings the reverse twist will break the ring in short order.

(i worked for them for 20 yrs)
