Offenhauser Intake - 04/09/11 02:23 PM
A coworker has an offenhauser 360 single carb intake manifold that will fit my 440. No carb comes with it. Are these intakes any good? What are the characteristics it has. Will my old AFB work with it? I could probably get it for $75 or so.

REALLY old-school stuff .... save yurr money, skip this one, add a couple of bucks to the purchase and get a Street Dominator.

If it's a dual plane and a DP fits your app (& I'm assuming it will as a dual plane fits most intended uses) then it'll b fine. As said not the perfect choice but money is tight and I'd approach him w (3) 20's in hand

Thanks fellas, it has two seperate ports per intake runner and the primaries are seperated from the secondaries at the carb base. I'm not racing the car so I'm looking for appearance but not at the cost of everyday driving. He told me to make him an offer but he is a coworker and friend so I don't want to rob him. I see new equivalent ones go for around $400, I saw a used one on racing junk for $250. I will tell him he would probably be money ahead selling it online before I offer him the cash. The 440 is a first year from a New Yorker and has the factory cast 4 barrel intake on it. I have a mid 60's AFB which I have been using and which would save me a ton of cash if I could keep using it.

No problems, the engine is needing a rebuild but it's sitting on a stand while I complete my never ending car resto. The AFB I have came from an old poly 4 barrel intake and I used it on the 440 just for a couple months before I commenced the car resto 4 years ago.

That old afb is likely costing you as much hp as the flat intake.Too small for performance.Just fine for cruising.

I run the Offy and think it works well

I've run a Offy in the past on a SB, mine ran real well.
I like em, old or not.
I have a small block Offy laying around. I wonder if it'd be worth putting it on my 360--currently just have an Edelbrock Performer on it.

RR ..... so you are talking about the SM for the A engine? I think I have one of those but all I have ever used are the ones for the B and RB.
There are some "dams" in those SM intakes that you have to wonder why they are there. ESPECIALLY the dams in A engine one. There has to be a reason for that because it would have been EZier for Eddy to build them without them.
I will see if I have a pic.

Yes SB, yeah I got a SM on there now w an eddy 1406. It has miniscule ports/plenum but it IS a single plane & that part got me thinking if a swap would benefit

For a single plane TORQUE intake for a SB in a MPG project .. it has to be good piece.
If I ever built a SB mpg engine ...I think that I would stick-with an SP2P because it takes a TQ carb so EZ.

Well I do have one of the "reverse" adapters to run a spreadbore carb on a square bore intake & if gas hits $5 I'll prob have Demonsizzler prep me a good TQ for the work vehicle

RR .... do you have a pic of that "throat" of the intake? I think that it is sooo restrictive.
Have you ever thought of prepping the carb yourself ? ... U R a sharp guy ...who could more-than-just-read a FSM.
It would take 10$ a gallon gas for a pay-back from an expense like that ..

That b it. EDIT from the straight shot ports the mixture distribution ought to b pretty good. I think an inop heatriser/short trips was hurtin me also
