71 383 dual snorkel air cleaner resto ??? - 03/07/11 05:28 PM

I am trying to get my stuff together on my 71 RR restoration and wondered if anyone had ever tried restoring an air cleaner on a 71 383 dual snorkel? I want the "spackle " type finish on mine, and I would also be interested in knowing if there is anyone who offers that service? Thanks, Greg ffgreg32@aol.com (Showing picture of what I want it to look like)

When you say "spakle" what you mean is "wrinkle finish". Over the counter at any auto parts store. Best bet is buy a cheap sand blaster and blast and paint it yourself.
Not a krinkle finish but you get the idea.

Done.
Sorry for the poor lighting.
you should get the idea.
Less than $50.00 including the blaster, blasting media, and paint.

If you don't have a compresser you can do a good job with a wire wheel in a grinder or even a drill. Just takes longer.

Is there a Harley dealership near you? They have a wrinkle finish spray paint in a rattle can. Looks good when baked after spraying.

I've done dozens of air cleaners & Hemi valve covers.. There are plenty of wrinkle finish spray paints out there that work pretty well, the tricks are heavy coats, time in between coats & a good even heat source that can bring the entire part up to about 130- 150 degrees... But since having a part powder coated with wrinkle finish & seeing how smooth and consistent the texture was I doubt I'll do many more wrinkle finish parts with a spray can unless I'm trying for a true OE finish where runs & sags are not only acceptable they are so much the norm that they are expected...

A heat gun or hair dryer will work too. I also put mine in the bright sunlight. It saves on electric.

I had mine powder coated with the wrinkle finish. I believe the guy used a harley product IIRC.

Looks great, I think I will check out the local powder coater, and see if they can do it. Thanks all!

I can get it real consistant.

Just heat the part in the oven to 300 degrees. Put down a cover coat. Back in the oven. Repeat with thin coats 3-4 times. Will build up a little more wrinkle with coats. Leave in oven for about 2 hours. Smells like heck. But real nice.

Not as rough as wrinkle as the ones I've got powdercoated.

MUCH more durable that outside air drying. I can take my finger nail with pressure across the paint with no paint damage.
