Stick shift with a Stroker 340 - 03/02/11 07:35 PM

I am in the process of putting my Duster back on the Street, since i really don't race much any more. I had to put new floor pans in so I can easily put the hump in and I had to cut the roll bar out and I am think of putting a 833 behind the 416ci I am building anybody else run 408 or 416 with a 833? Will it take the torque ? I am just thinking this would be a lot more fun than a 727 on the street.

I think the conventional wisdom is that the 23 spline is good. If you are making over 500 hp you should put together an 18 spline. The OD trans won't last if you are making power.

Guys are putting 833's behind a lot more than a 416 so I wouldn't worry about it. 23 spline is fine from your application. The guys who break 23 spline 833's usually have a B body weight car, lot of torq and slicks.

Yep! My son did it last year(LAR414). As far as I know, He's lovin' it.
From personal experience, I wouldn't loose a second of sleep worrying about if it can handle the torque. It can!

A833? You mean the trans Chrysler built to take the punishment of the mighty Max Wedge?

I know a guy that runs a 23 spline in a E body with a 416 since 2003.

Im running a 360 Magnum crate motor in my 70 Duster that ive tweaked to 450 h.p. .I have a 23 spline 4 speed from Brewers. I run it hard with 4:10's and slicks. I am very happy with it. Sticks are way more fun than automatics and they dont take away the horse power that an auto trans does. I've been told though,if your not Ronny Sox they are'nt as consistent as a 727.

As I understand it, a 23 spline should be stronger than an 18 spline. While the splines would be smaller, there is more surface area. It's the same principal as a fine thread bolt being stronger than a standard/coarse threaded bolt. E.G. lug bolts are fine thread as opposed to coarse.

No the 23 spline is race proven to be weaker. While the 18 has less splines, they are larger and beefier. There are internal differences as well.

I run an iron case 23 spline OD 4spd behind my 408. It works awesome. If I want to hammer it on the highway I just drop back down to 3rd. OD doesn't get into the power band until after 100mph anyway. I have 4.10 gears with 275-60/15" bfg tires.

I have shattered a driveshaft and blown apart a U joint, the trans is fine

Keisler TKO so you can run on the freeway at 70+. 415 RWHP no problem for me.

Thanks for the Info -I was thinking about a Keisler TKO but for that money I put a 833 in with dual disc clutch and a quicktime bellhousing.

Like others have said don't think twice about it. Put that extra pedal in there and have fun. There are some that might chime in and say "I broke 3rd gear with a stock 440". Trans prob had bad main brgs and was a worn out piece of junk. I have lots of customers beating the snot out of these things on the street with more power than you have without a problem.

I believe, there in lies the difference; the larger diameter. I should have said, "All other things being equal...."
