A-833 Front gasket, sealer, or no?

A-833 Front gasket, sealer, or no? - 02/11/11 12:23 AM

I seemed to recall that the paper gaskets on 4-speeds were not supposed to have any sealant on the front gasket and side cover.

I just got done cleaning off the front gasket that someone sealed on with silicone (was leaking).

I just need to confirm whether I remember correct? Gasket Sealer on the front or no?

I think gasket cement on the paper gaskets would be entirely apporpriate. Permatex "high tack" spray, the red stuff is thin/works very well on paper gaskets & the spray can makes for a fast/easy app

I agree , I use the copper coat spray with good results .

I had a can of the hi-tack copper gasket. When I get the engine in, I dont think it will leak anymore.

I had bought seals for it a couple years ago. Come to find out, the side seals that napa sold me were not needed, it had o-rings. Put new o-rings from ACE in it.

Thanks for the advice.

If someone sealed it with silicone, take a real close look at the bearing retainer. They're cast iron and crack very easily if overtightened - particularly with a paper gasket behind it. Its worth a few minutes to look now rather than discovering a leak after everything's in.

I cleaned it with a knife down to bare metal. There werent any cracks. I torqued them down to spec.
