Small block heads bolts - 02/10/11 05:01 PM
I knew the small block head bolts never got any sealant on the threads but I did not know that using studs or the wrong diameter bolts or studs would cause a oil restiction to the heads? Anybody run into problems with this?

One small block head bolt is longer than the rest. It has a reduced shank diameter to allow oil up to the rocker shaft stand.

Per Jim Szilagyi quote: The oil path to the heads is really complicated compared to most engines. Sometimes if the wrong head bolts are used, oil can be restricted to the cylinder heads. The head bolts have a reduced area to allow more oil flow around the bolt and up to the heads.
The oil flows from #2 and #4 camshaft journals through oil passage in the deck to the heads.
I am aware of the of 3/8 bolts and larger holes at the bottom of the rocker shafts.

I should have said that using 3/8 bolts over 5/16 will cause a problem and I am aware of that.

It's on page 38 of his stroker handbook, just a misprint, should say rocker arm holddown bolts instead of head bolts EDIT meant to say rocker
shaft holdown bolts
