Pertronix 1 and ballast

Pertronix 1 and ballast - 02/02/11 09:39 PM

I have two pertronix (not II version) on two separate 383s. I am running the stock replacement coil from the parts store on each, with the ballast hooked up. Can I rid of the ballast? If so, can I take the wire leading to the ballast and tie it into the wire coming off? Both ballasts are single post (one of each side) versions as used originally when a single point setup was used.

Why don't you contact their tech dept.? They answered back pretty quick when I had my own questions regarding using with MSD products.

If the Pertronix I just electronically switches the coil pri on/off like the points mechanically did then I think elim the ballast would overload the coil the same as it would by doing it on a stock points setup but I would contact them or Scratchnfotraction in Florida would know if he sees this. EDIT if you are dead set on elim the ballast I'm sure there's a canister shaped coil available that's designed for full 12V that could be painted black and yes you would (w that coil) run a wire (iirc Scratch said #10 is plenty) behind the ballast to bypass it or toss it & connect the 2 wires that were on the end(s) of it

If you by-pass the ballast resistor, you will be feeding the coil with 12v, which I believe overloads the coil. If you wish to connect the (+) red wire of the Pertronix to the coil and eliminate the routing to the ballast resistor ignition side, you will need to install at the minimum a Flamethrower coil.

This is the answer I got from Pertronix tech support yesterday when I asked them the very same thing:

Yes, you can bypass the resistor as long as you install a 1.5 ohm coil. The black epoxy is different then the original (shorter and slightly smaller, I recommend you use the black oil filled coil #40011, it looks original and you can run 12 volts

If you use the OEM coil you have to use the ballast resistor (1.5 ohm)

If you use the Pertronix flame thrower coil then you dont need the ballast resistor.

Thats what pertronix tech line told me.There flame thrower II and there ignition works together with no ballast.Ran it all summer that way.
