What can I use to seal my tranny cover FOREVER?

What can I use to seal my tranny cover FOREVER? - 01/28/11 09:09 PM

I'm tired of my tranny cover leaking. I bought a new cover and it still leaks. I've tried a cork gasket, rubber gasket and even tried two of each gasket! I've tried it with the spray tack with no luck.

I now want to bond it to the tranny FOREVER! Tell me what to use and I'll do it! I know this isn't the brightest idea, but I can't take it any more. Nothing makes a classic car look crappier than fluid leaking on the ground every time you park it! HELP!

Are you sure it is leak from the pan ?
maybee comming from plug inside the bell for kick down lever shaft .
Or maybee the case has a crack or the vent is plugged .
i work on subaru cars and the factory puts the pans on with this pink factory trans silione type sealer and let me tell you if you use that you could take the bolts out and drive forever after it sets up .
i would not do anything drastic like jb or anything .

use one of the new style gasket on it

get it at the dealership parts counter

around 20$

kinda thick with o-ring rib on both side,it does not crush,DO NOT OVER TORQUE THE PAN BOLTS! it will strip the threds out...the gasket does not cruch and its re-usable

make sure the pan rail is in good shaped and not warped/puckerd at the bolt holes

hammer dolly them flat if need be first

are you sure its the pan leaking?

you have 2 seals right above the pan rail(shift selector/throttle pressure valve linkage) that will leak and drail down on to the pan rail

the lines can leak as the brass fittings some times cracks

the NSS switch can leak

the low revs pivot pin can leak, its at the rear of the case and tail housing

I degreese/wash them down good with brake clean, throw a hand full of baby powder around all the palces it leaks

this will pin point where it is leaking real ez

if you have done the pan that many times, with a new pan,I would wager its something else leaking

and your right it does make a kool car look junky when it drippys

cast alum pans are another good way to seal up a alum case tranz

good luck

Sorry but you just can't do that , the trans need to be serviced . I'll second are you sure it's the pan , gravity is a funny thing . Ther are 3 leak points ABOVE the pan , remember that gravity thing ??? The dipstick tube , the seal for the shift shaft and the pin for the rear band are all places that can leak and you'll think it's the pan ...

I was at that same frustration level after several gaskets and a cast aluminum pan, replaced the dipstick with the Chebby style - Finally figured out with some spray cleaner and a bright halogen light that the tail shaft gasket right above the back of the pan was seeping and running all the way around the pan lip to drip off the front of the pan . Got that fixed and put the pan back on with the silver Permatex silicone and no gasket- hasn't leaked a drop since...

I have bought new pans and used all the different gaskets and took it to a tranny shop this last time and let them do it and a month later it is leaking again. Mine isn't leaking any where except the pan so I'm taking it back to the shop and let them try it again. The bottom of the tranny is straight and there isn't any cracks in it. So 1 more time for me.

Best pan gasket is the Mopar sandwich style. Can't over tighten it and it's reusable. No sealer needed.

Re: What can I use to seal my tranny cover FOREVER? - 01/29/11 06:34 AM

I may have more than one leak, but the pan is definitely leaking. I've taken the pan off at least five times in the eight years I've owned the car and the result is the same. It ALWAYS leaks when I put it back on. Very frustrating.

As for servicing the tranny, I rebuilt it two years ago, so I shouldn't have any problems for awhile. My plan is to do a fluid and filter change the same time I seal the pan for good. I only drive the car about 1K a year, so I won't need a new filter for a long time.

As for you 4 speed guys, I'll stick with my 727 Torqueflite, thank you. It shifts flawlessly and saves wear and tear on my left leg and right arm! Big selling point when your body's starting to crap out on you!

Thanks for all the input. I did consider JB Weld, but I would have to make up a big batch of it and work fast! That $20 gasket might be worth a shot. Can't hurt at this point. Thanks again!

I COULDN`T GET THE PAN TO SEAL ON MY NEON UNTIL I USED THIS STUFF. http://www.permatex.com/brand_right_stuff.htm

I was in same boat, changed pan gasket 3 times till I figure out it was leaking from 3 other places and making it look like the pan gasket was the problem.

I recently did the first rec trans service on our 05 and the simple autozone filter and ultra black rtv, dont remember if it even had a gasket in the box. Maybe 10k ago and not a damp spot to be seen.

Alot of the newer trans ive serviced only have rtv of some sort or another and many no gasket at all.

Didnt know the neon pans were a problem.

Dont start on the dipstickless newer trans that you fill from the bottom of the pan....

They are if you try to use a gasket. Try one and get back with me on your success. The autozone filter kit I bought had a rubber gasket and it leaked almost immediately. Then I tried a cork and it lasted a week or two. Then I used the Right Stuff and not a drop. I talked to a Dodge dealer tech and he said that they only use sealer on the neon trans pans. I never was a RTV sealer type of guy since it always seems messy and I always worried about some getting in places it shouldn`t be. I still use a gasket if possible but the neon was the exception.

I always use the Mopar gray sealant. Works better than any of the permatex stuff. Never had any leak problems. Needs no gasket.

Re: What can I use to seal my tranny cover FOREVER? - 01/30/11 03:40 PM

I looked yesterday, no gasket was used, just the ultra black and I think I let it sit overnight before filling.

As I mentioned many dont use a gasket these days, a concept alot of us cant think about.

I do know as thin and frail as the newer pans are and as good as the factory seal is its very easy to warp them when removing and get caught up trying to get them right on re-install.

But im glad I didnt go the gasket way...

Try MOPAR ATF sealant. Best stuff I have ever used. You can put this stuff on a dripping wet surface and have no problems. We use it at the dealership for everything.

Re: What can I use to seal my tranny cover FOREVER? - 01/30/11 04:52 PM

x4 on the MOPAR ATF/RTV BLACK

I only use it on all of the engine gaskets and then the copper rtv for the exhast gaskets

those 2 are the best for everything,IMHO

if you use a thin coat smoothed with finger to coat the gasket surface thin and evenly it should not get were it does not belong

goob it all up and squeeze over 1/2 of it back out..yea it will happen,I found 2 different rads cloged with rtv from goobs changing the t-stat and over doing the rtv

does not go in the oil pumps very well either
