Police Car ID

Police Car ID - 01/21/11 06:30 AM

I'm going tomorrow to look at a couple of Plymouths, a '74 and a '75. I was told the '75 is a "Police Interceptor". It is a Gran Fury. What do I need to look for on the fender tag or the VIN?

2nd digit of the VIN should be K, certified speedo, fender tag should be coded A38

Police Interceptor is a Ford. Look at the tail panel of any Crown Vic.

Something similar to this....
Possible 999 paint code on tag (or possibly some other paint code too)
Low level interior
K as the first character in the VON
Lots of F codes

Thanks for the info. I was aware that it wasn't a "Interceptor" that is why it was in quotes. It is a word that helps people sell cars, nothing else. But, I used to drive a Gran Fury, I think a '74, that had a HP 400 in it. It was an unmarked car and nobody ever got away from me. I remember chasing a SS Chevelle one night and had to keep on the brakes to keep from running into the back of that thing. I used to think I had a 440, but I looked closer and found the 400 numbers. That thing was awesome. Idled just like the Super Bee I had at the time.

Wasn't the E86 code used in those years as well? 360, 400, and 440 were available....someone on dippy.org could answer this one for sure.

Some jurisdictions ordered their vehicles so, you could still be staring at one w/o the K vin. Look for the A38 in the tag or K VON.

Take pics!...

Re: Police Car ID - 01/21/11 09:31 PM

Well, I found the Plymouth and it was different. It was a Police Car. Certified speedometer to 140, had a large round dome light in the right spot. The fender tags were as follows:
The first one:
999 Body In White
999 Special Mask
999 Special Paint
999 Special Order

The second tag:
End
N41 P39 S41 Y39 214
?58 F88 G11 G63 H51 K57
V02 U A38 F39 F43 F49
999 E3X9 TX9 31 K09791
E86 D36 PH 41 U6D166386

The green emissions control sticker on the radiator header said "FB-440-4HP-7S Family.
Engine code was 6 T 440HP
1-29
I would have put it on the trailer but the only thing on the body that didn't need replacing was the front clip. Looked like it slammed into a steel guard rail that opened it up like a can opener. Kind of hard to replace 3 doors, both quarters, trunk, extensions, gas tank, trunk. That was evident without getting underneath it. I can't figure out the special paint, as it was white. I didn't see any other color underneath it except for rust. Beside it was a '73 Duster /6, nice body, running 6 auto on the column, complete car, but the VIN plate was gone along with the fender tag. Make a nice drag car for somebody and he said he would take $500 for it.

It was a 1976 Grand Fury, 440HP engined police car. If you ready want to know what all the codes meant, let me know.

runrmc, I sent you a PM

Re: Police Car ID - 01/24/11 02:38 AM

Here's what some of the codes mean:
A39 - Police Package
F43 - Reinforcement for spotlight
F88 - Engine oil cooler
G11 - Tinted glass all
H51 - Single A/C with heater
N41 - Dual exhaust
D36 - Heavy duty 727 trans
E86 - 440HP engine
Y39 - Special order

The 999 codes were used when the cars were custom painted as per the
police department's color scheme. The 2nd digit being a "H" isn't
unusual for a '75 and newer police car. The A38 makes it a police package car. I had a '77 Grand Fury from the North Carolina State Police that had a "H".

The car you parted out looked 10 times better than the one I looked at.

Re: Police Car ID - 01/25/11 02:48 AM

Why would anyone part that out?

And it's a GRAN Fury...not Grand...

Re: Police Car ID - 01/26/11 01:12 AM

An illegal citizen was caught driving the car and it was impounded. After some time a junk title was issued to the impound yard by the NJ state police, so the car could be scrapped or sold for parts. It was a shame, but the vin could not be registered. Nevertheless, I saved the 440/727 and the rear with some other parts to put in my 70 charger. It was defiantly a cool car. It had lots of auxiliary coolers for all the fluids including the oil. If I could have titled it I would have kept it. I think I have the fender tags somewhere for the car if ya want I could take a pic of them.

That's a damn shame. I don't even want to get into these ridiculous state laws on classic cars over some stupid incident like that.

Re: Police Car ID - 01/26/11 04:19 AM

FYI a police car wont necessarily always have a "K" code as the 2nd digit.

The K code denotes a car that is equipped with a police package, which is generaly what larger agencies ordered as fleet cars, but back then departments could specify police equipment ala carte and simply order a standard PH, PL, etc car and spec it out to their needs or budget. For example, they could get a car with a spotlight or a reinforced roof but not get a HD cooling system or brakes.
