TORSION BAR REMOVAL...WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW

TORSION BAR REMOVAL...WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW - 01/11/11 07:37 PM

I have 64 Plymouth and I want to remove the front end to get it all powder coated. Do I need special tools or what do I need to know about removing the torsion bars. People I have asked around here act like its a major deal? Also where is the place to buy a total front end rebuild kit for a Mopar. I have used PST in the past. Thanks for any advice.

You have to loosen the adjusting nut in the LCA all the way down to take the pressure off. Get the car in the air, remove the retaining ring in the back of the torsion bar, take a big pair of vise grips or anything "Craftsman" (lifetime warranty....), clamp it on the torsion bar and bang it out.

do not use vise grips if you want to reuse the bar,it will mar, chip bar and may break there while driving.

I've never had that problem, and I've done it many times. The torsion bar is much stronger than any pressure applied from a pair of vise grips. Maybe you guys can tell him (and me) the correct way to get them out without buying the "one time tool" or whatever it's called.

Remove the nut for the pivot shaft and the strut on the lower control arm, after removing the tension off the T bar, and pry the control arm back with a long bar. Visegrips will put marks in the T bar and could cause it to break according to the internet and the factory service manual .

This idea WILL work, and I agree that it may never produce any ill effects, but it isnt good advice. I have used vice grips, pipe wrenches and Channel locks to remove T bars. I have also removed them by pulling the LCAs as well. I have never had a torsion bar fail, but it can happen. On cars I dismantle, I'll use a pipe wrench. On the Charger and Frankenduster, I just pull the control arm to be safe.

Usually when all the tension is removed, they will just slide out; unless rusted badly. I've never used a tool before. Just make sure the adjusting bolt is out, and remove the upper control arm rebound bumper to allow the suspension to droop all the way. Sometimes the strut will need to be loosened as it can put a slight twist on the lower control arm, but since you're dismantling the whole shebang anyway, save the torsion bar for last.

I do want to reuse the bars so hopefuly they will come out easy. I am going to take a good look at it tonight. I have never messed with any front end stuff before so its time to learn. As far as powder coat I guess if its all out and getting blasted I figure why not powder coat, plus I got a buddy in that business Thanks for the advice for sure.

You might not want to paint OR powdercoat the flats on the ends could make it hard to reinstall them.

buy the proper tool, it's like $40, easy to use & a no sweat job removing torsion bars, takes 15 mins tops provided adjusters aren't rusted.

Remember to put a good coat of wheel bearing grease on the end of the torsion bar that goes into the rear of the bar when reinstalling to bar with a new seal.. there is a snap ring on the rear also that has to be removed prior to taking the bar out..

What if that tool puts a scratch in the torsion bar? Looks very similar to the "vise grips" I've used.. Guess you don't plan on re-installing them after using that tool?

ive used it about 100 times never mared a bar yet, on show cars and drag car with painted bars i wrap 2 winds of masking tape around t-bar does not even take paint off during removeal, tell me you can do that with hackinstien vise grips. and if you have aftermarket bars that are bigger and cost $$ why would you even think of putting vise grips on them.

Re: TORSION BAR REMOVAL...WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW - 01/12/11 03:50 AM

A torsion bar is round & you put a preload on it to get the spring effect when it twists. The stress from twisting is spread out around the bar & is evenly distributed. When stress from twisting encounters a gouge in the metal, not just a light surface scratch the stress is distributed unevenly & can cause a stress fracture leading to a failure of the bar. That is why when stress releiving something such as a block, all edges & corners are rounded off, so the stress is distributed evenly & it doesn't stop at a point that could cause a fracture.

Makes sense to me.
Oh, and so you all know, you can have the adjuster bolt all the way out and even if nothing is rusty, the torsion bars hex can and will be a pisser to separate. The grease in the socket on reassembly will reduce the efforts in the future.
