73 satellite gas tank questions UPDATE sender ? - 01/05/11 02:43 AM

Hey guys,

I just dropped the old full of rust tank from the 73 today and had a couple questions.

I noticed the tank had 4 vents on it with lines that just go right to some kind of block right above the tank. I didn't look hard, but it looks like they go just to that and thats it. is that right?

From the sending unit it I have one line that comes out and goes up front. 5/16 it seems (original 318 car) and the connector for the gauge I am assuming and then a ground strap.

I thought there was a return as well? or am I confused?

I am quite sure if there was any kind of emissions type stuff on this car it is long gone as my dad used to race street/strip this car in the 80's when I was in high school.

anyway, I am making this car a driver in every sense. Not a show car. It is for my son to use as well. So I don't care about anything other than a working gauge and fuel getting up front.

so can I just get the replacment tank, hook up the 4 vents back to those old lines, put in a new fill tube grommet and ride? ofcourse run new fuel line up front.

if I am going to run new line up front I should probably get a sender with a 3/8 pickup right? this car will see either a 440 or possibly a 493 in about 6 months. there is no difference in the senders other than the line size right?

I attached a pic of the car just because it is finally getting somewhere. promised this to be ready for my sons high school graduation as the last time it was on the road was my graduation in 88, but I am a little behind as he is in college now. LOL

Sender is measuring 74.4 ohms empty and if I flip the tank over it reads 7.5 ohms full. I was told 10-73. Do I have to tweek it or will this work?

I just put in a new fuel line to the fuel pump, completly did away with emmisions parts, mine also was missing most of it. If you are planning on going with electric fuel pump, you may want to run a return line.

I am scanning the ebay now and see that the senders with the 3/8 all have the return. I was going to run a regular pump i think.

if i run electric, i would probably use the return, but if not I could just cap it right?

There should be a 1/4" return line from the vapor separator(that 4 line thing in front of the tank) that goes to the front of the car and attaches to the Charcoal canister.

On a 318 car there is one return line from the tank vapor separator to the charcoal canister.
a 440 car has an additional line from the in line fuel filter/vapor separator (under the alternator) to a second nipple on the fuel pickup/sending unit.

Yes but make sure the vapor separator is properly vented to prevent a leak or vapor lock problem.

If the fuel line is not rusted just run carb cleaner through it and call it a day.
BUT if your going to put a 440 in it change it eventually

the sending units are the same but a 440 sender will have a 3/8" pickup and a second return line nipple.

IMGTX, thanks for the comment and thanks for the detailed info. I will look under there again tomorrow to see about that line that should run up front to the charcoal canister. I know for a fact my dad did away with that a long time ago. I guess it is vented somehow as he ran like that for years.

I put a 73 gas tank in my 74. Those 4 hoses on the top, I just capped them off, then had to run a vented gas cap so vacuum would not build up in the tank. I capped off the vapor cannister and junked it as well. Was originally from a 318 car so it never had the provisions for the vapor seperator. I have heard of some guys soddering in a 3/8" fuel pickup line into their original 5/16" pickup assy to do it on the cheap. Have read enough stories from guys on here having trouble with the aftermarket fuel senders that modding a stocker doesn't sound like a bad idea.

Tristan, I figured you would post and I appreciate it. No reusing the stock sender as it is probably now the most rusted part in my garage. It was terrible. This car hasn't had fuel put in it since 1988. I hope the aftermarket one isn't junk. Thanks for the tips.

Just a note. Varnish will look like rust. I had a guy give me a tank he swore was rusted and a little carb cleaner and it was good as new.

Thanks. This ones is bad and had a hole as well. I emptied large chunks of rusty crap out of it.

just ordered all the replacement stuff a few minutes ago.

Good luck with it. I bought a new spectra premium gas tank for my car. Another 73 tank, still sitting new in the box, will be in the car by spring. My 73 tank that I swapped in is pretty beat and leaks around the fuel neck because I accidentally wallowed out that hole trying to get the neck out 8 years ago.

Also, test out your aftermarket fuel sender with your multimeter before you install the tank. Put the sender in and attach the multimeter, take a reading. Then flip the gas tank over and take another reading. You want close to 10ohms full/73 empty. Don't be too surprised if you need to tweak the rod going to the float to get the readings within range.

You should be just fine with those readings.
