Does a single stage paint (PPG) need to be clear coated, or is it an overkill.

Single-stage means no clearcoat; the color coat is the final application of paint.
2-stage refers to a basecoat (color) and clear overcoat; Basecoats for 2-stage systems have no gloss, they're basically satin, and the gloss and protection are provided by the clear topcoat.
Single-stage paints are not formulated to be cleared over; it can be done, but there may be compatibility issues that won't allow the two chemicals to properly bond.

The single stage paints I have used have almost 50% clear mixing into them. No need to coat more, I use single stage because it's easier to touch up. All clear coat yellow in time. Just my

If you read the p-sheets, a lot of the single stage paints specifically say you can spray on your regular single stage paint, then topcoat that with single spray mixed with clear to give you some extra gloss.

Thats how I painted my Harley- 2 coats PPG Concept, 1 coat 50/50 clear and color, then 1 final coat of clear...Turned out great and no way the clear can ever seperate from the color, which is what I hate about 2-stage paints...In about another year or two I'm going to repaint the Mopar the same way

I believe the guy painting my truck stated PPG Concept. He quoted a price and than stated later for a little extra he could clear coat the paint. If it is worth it I don't mind paying extra for it. I will get more details prior to making a commitment on the paint job.

Just my opinion here, but I have always thought clearing a solid 1 stage color is a waste of paint. You might as well just use base/clear to start with, the base color is easier to control, and you can put as much clear on as you want then. If you have a metallic 1 stage color than good luck to you. Because no matter what these guys say, it isn't easy to get the metallic to lay correctly from panel to panel unless you have experience. Watering down with clear will not help! And just to stir the pot one final time, 1 stage looks more original on these old musclecars, orange peel and all. Sorry, must be the cold here in Maine today..........

most single stage out there now look pretty good without clear, It's works and gives a little better DOI,but if all he's going to do is a little clear in the last coat i wouldn't do it, if it needs buffed there's a good chance breaking through the half coat of clear, Single stage is usually pretty high solids and putting a couple coats of clear on top of that gives more than ideal film build. If you want the clear i'd switch to base

1 stage looks more original on these old musclecars, orange peel and all.

I agree if you going for the true old oem look or have an org car there will be orange peel in one place or another.

I was gonna post on the light Blue 70 Runner so called surviver car because it looked so straight and perfect for old single stage paint.

My 70 runner had factory orange peel as does my 70 e body...IMO base/clear is for showing that laser straight body...the older single stage is much more forgiving in coverage, ease of painting and upkeep.

As mentioned it is hard to keep met paint equal, I mix everything in one new 5 gallon bucket and keep it stiring during the whole process so I hope to get equal pots of paint in the gun, dont know what the factory used 35-40 years ago but I use a simple base old school gun (primer gun) on all old stuff.......im either good or lucky......I think its more luck.

I guess it comes from experience, I have a beautiful black '71 RS Camaro that I did base/clear when I was doing bodywork full time. 3 wet coats of clear, over BMW black base, wet sanded with 2000 grit, polished, bla bla bla......... and I am always paranoid to drive it. In 20 years it has only gathered 2 chips, and they might has well have been caused by a baseball bat, because the aggrivation just was not worth it. So I am a lot less fussy these days, with the multitudes of mirror finish cars at shows these days, who cares? My theme now is to make them look new, not perfect. Just my

I agree with you a 100% - been there and done that with my 64 Stude and 68 Dart. My Blood Pressure shoots up every time I take them out for a ride. I'll probably just have the body shop shoot it without the clear coat, Unless they give me a deal I can't refuse!!
