Denzo Alt Wiring Help?

Denzo Alt Wiring Help? - 01/01/11 08:13 PM

I picked up a Denzo alternator in the JY from a late 80s dodge pickup and the connections are not a plug like all the internet sites show. It has 4 wires, 2 heavy black ones that go to the case and the output screw terminals. Then it has a blue and and green small wires to two screw terminals. It has no labels on any of the screw terminals. I don't know why it needs such a heavy wire going to the case (obviously ground I think) it is the same size as the output cable. Does anyone know where the blue and green wires hook to? I am trying to hook this up to a 68 barracuda with stock wiring harness. I assume these are internally regulated so can I bypass the stock wiring and leave it in place? Is it green to ignition switch, blue and heavy output to the battery, and is the heavy black wire to the case just ground? Thanks for your help.

a pic would help. It's been forever since I wired my denso, but it's externally regulated just like my stock 1968 alt was. I'd assume yours is too, accounting for two of the terminals (one goes to reg, other gets grounded to alt case. My alt had a special plug for these field wires, but it's from an 02 van and I think it's the first year for that special plug, so yours has the two studs that you use ring terminals and nuts with.

I'm sure someone will chime in here who's got an actual diagram of some sort though.

The tiny blue and green wires will go to your external voltage regulator. (assuming you have a two terminal VR, otherwise one goes to the VR, and the other you tie to ground).

The big black wire going to the case on the alt is just a good ground like you thought. With the higher amperage alts, it becomes more critical that they have a good connection to ground.

Hoozie is correct, you can just wire it to a 2 wire regulator off say a 87 new yorker (lots of those in the yards) if there are issues with your current wiring.
