Original A12 six pack intake identification question - 12/24/10 06:15 PM

I'm sure that this has been asked in the past but how do you identify an original A12 aluminum intake vs an over the counter or later production intake. Anybody out there have a picture showing the differences?

Thanks, Buddy

Yea, hang on a sec while I dig

This is an original. The number 6 is VERY slightly different than later post production units (Mikes picture below shows it more clearly), leans a bit out of line with the other digits and has a slightly different shape at the top where it loops over to the right. Also, the production intakes lack the "CH" casting on the center lower area (see next pic).

To get this thread started the most basic thing to first look for is the Chrysler part number 3412046 (not 48) and most consider the lack of the CH6B to be correct for all production A12's. If it doesn't have a Chrysler part number that's the first clue, then the 046 and then the CH6B....

Here's a later non production line version, the CH casting number is pointed out.

So if you just ground the CH casting smooth, you'd have an "original"?

No, it's been tried before and fooled most, but if a guy is really on his game he'll be able to spot the subtlties, for example see the comments about the number 6

You can tell by looking inside at the casting and the machine work. Plenum is a dead give away. Origs look like they were cast in the late 60s. Dull cutters and chatter marks and cork screw lines are easy to spot. That is of course after the outside passes.

So the 048 P/N would be an over the counter intake back in the days and did not come on equipped 6pk cars?

No, actually the "6" looks like an "8" in the 3412046 casting. The CH6 replacement manifold does not have the odd "6", etc.

OK well mine is 048 and has no Ch6 markings at all.

The 048 was the later Chrysler (performance) parts over the counter Edelbrock 3x2 intake manifold. Still a Chrysler exclusive part (with a Chrysler part number) but not a '69 intake manifold like the 046 part number.

I just bought a new one from summit and it has the 48 # and no ch marking.

I guess it must be licensed by Chrysler/Mopar Performance if it has a Chrysler part number (i.e. 3412048) cast into it.....

How much are the correct A12 ones going for in good condition with good threads?
