Question about column A-body shifter linkage - 11/20/10 05:47 AM

Can someone tell me if the linkage from the column to the trans. on a column shift automatic A-body is the same linkage used on both 727 and 904 transmissions?

The Z bar, and I think the arm from Z bar to trans, is different , and hard to find .

I used the same linkage from a 318 904 to a 400 727.

Yes, how did you have to modify it?

This is a motor home 727 (not sure if that makes a difference) and it was a few years ago, it did involve some mods had to grind a tab on the trans, but I can not remember what else I did, it was minor. This was when it was column shift car.
It was a pain to get it off when I went to floor shifter.
Somebody on www.bigblockdart.com would know for sure.

Can anyone tell me how to tell the difference? I want to look for a set of small block 727 linkage but I don't know how to tell the difference from the 904 linkage.

On the 904 the linkage that connects to the transmission that moves the selector into gear is adjustable with a threaded rod and screw.

The 727 has an square block that slides onto a shaft coming out of the trans and that block is what adjusts the gear selector.

..727 trans is wider so the z bar is about an inch shorter. The 904 can be 'forced into place and will work but it is better to make a couple of witness marks, cut an inch out and re-weld.
the trans bracket for the z bar is lower but you can install the 904 bracket under the trans tab and it will sit level
the shift and kickdown linkages usually have enough adjustment to work.
the carb to trans lever on the intake mounts higher on a 4bbl intake and is longer and these parts are avail.
Hard to find a column shifted 727 in an A body..
