piston for magnum head

thinking about getting a set or eq magnum heads or the new rhs heads....never ran a set of magnum style heads before. what would be a good piston to run with these heads to get around 9-9.5 compression??? been doing some studying but kinda confused on the whole quench thing...been looking at some kb pistons and it says u have to machine to get optimum quench?? don't wanna act dumb but never dealt with this quench stuff before....don't wanna do any more machining than i have to either

Hello Kyle. Perfectly logical Q. Yes KB's and you would need to mockup/measure for how much to have the flat quench pads milled to get the desired .035"-.040" piston to head clearance & w .035" your measuring needs to be dead on incl piston rock (having the pistons squared up in the bore when you measure). .040" is safe and after .045 you start to lose the benefit. Closed chambers I'm assuming. It'll be worth it whhen your done.

KB # 362 is designed to work with closed chamber heads. I use them with my Indybrocks at .038 quench.Very light piston/ pin combo. Mine come in at 590 grams.

what motor? 360? there's a number of people running flat top KB107's with a .039" head gasket and OEM magnum heads. works out to ~10.6:1. Most are running a comp XE268 sized cam (268adv, 224@.050, 110LSA, 106 ICL) and run fine on 89+ octane gas.

I don't have any part numbers to recommend, but a Magnum style piston would have a quench pad to match the closed chamber Magnum head, and it would still have a partial dish. If they were zero decked, in theory that may get your compression around 9.5 or 10 and maybe run on 87?

Last night I installed KBs 362 (I think that's the number) in my 360 Magnum. The decks have been milled around .012" to true them up. After installation the flat dome of the piston was .017" above deck. With a .052" head gasket I will Be right at .035" quench height. I am building a strictly street engine that will rarely, if ever, see 6000 rpm.
I plan on running RHS heads.
