Popping out Intake - 08/31/08 06:01 AM

HELP me please?????????????????????????

I have popping out of the intake on all cylinders. Have tried resetting timing adv and ret w/ no resolution to problem. Running a mild MP purple shaft cam. Replaced lifters after finding a colapsed one. Replaced the MP junk lifters w/ Comp cams replacement hyd lifters. If no one answers will repost in race section.

When does it pop?? Any time you rev the engine? Only under load? Lots of things can cause it we need more info... To lean will cause a pretty severe backfire & the engine will stumble...A flat exhaust lobe on the cam will cause a series of little pops (pop pop pop pop) through the intake on light acceleration & while the engine will lack power it won't exactly stumble instead it will feel more like a miss..

We first noticed it when it was first started. The intake is off and timing cover removed to check timing. It does it when you crank it over w/ a starter trigger.

So does it run at all? If not I'd be double checking the firing order, pull #1 sparkplug & bump the engine over till you feel compression, then check the timing marks while manualy turning the engine over to TDC...Now look where the rotor is pointing, it should be toward #1...If not either pull the distributor & reposition the intermediate shaft as needed to line it up or move the plug wires so #1 is were the rotor is pointing...then install the rest of the wires in the proper order (18436572) in the direction the rotor turns when cranking the engine....

Did it have even compression on all eight cylinders? When cranking over with the ignition disabled does it have an even rythym or does it seem to spin faster then slower?

Stumpy We were thinking that too, but I ordered the correct ones from MP when I replaced the cam.

With the engine off, you should be able to spin/turn every pushrod that isn't on compression/lift. If you can't, then the valves are being held open.

Thanks for the replies guys! The Problem wasn't what any of us discussed. It turns out the the crank gear was on the wrong notch. DOH!!

Glad you found it!!! I've sen it before, you expect the dot inline with the keyway like Chevy & Ford, the mark is barely stamped so it's practically invisable & the fun begins....
Again Glad you found it!!!
