Have you pulled a sparkplug, grounded it and see if you have spark jumping across the gap? If so then put your finger over #1 hole with no plug in it and bring it up to TDC on the damper while feeling compression push past your finger. Stop it at TDC and twist your distributor until it's at #1, check the rest of the wires for proper firing order, then button it together and start it up.
If you don't have spark jumping the gap on the grounded plug you have to do more work to see why you have no spark. Most likely a bad ballast resistor or ECU unless you still have points?

The only thing I would do different, is when you line up your engine at TDC, back it off until the timing pointer is at about 10* BTDC, then line up your distributor with the #1 plug wire. Just giving it the extra 10* helps it start easier. Of course this is if you're getting spark.

What is the history of the car/motor? Was it running at some point before you made changes? Was the motor rebuilt.
If you have done all of the above and checked for fuel, spark, and made sure you don't have the distributor in 180 off. Then it is starting to sound to me like your timing chain jumped some teeth.

Hey, I couldn't start my 318 85 earlier this year after pulling all of the pollution junk off of it. Believe it or not, I started turning the distributor CCW from where it should have been. It would sound like it wanted to start as I turned it another 10 to 15 degrees. As is stands now, the distributor is 90 degrees from where it should be. There is only one reason for that, the shaft from the oil pump is off. I haven't checked it, mainly because of the closeness of the distributor to the firewall. it wouldn't fit in the first place. But, after checking everything to make sure it was all working, turning the distributor out of its normal position didn't hurt it, and unbelievablely, it started and has been running for over six months now this way.

do you have the oil changed and carb fixed?I bet the ballast is fried or the ecu is toast. I'm sure I have some spares to try.Does it crank over with the key like normal now??If you have everything ready to fire up.I might have an hour or so this weekend.Don't even try to start it with that oil in there.I have that spring if you still need it.Key on,Do you voltage at the positive side of coil?checking spark right at the coil? not the dist/coil wire,Could have bad wires.Check directly at coil tower. Also the neg side of coil should flash a ground signal if all is working right. If you have everyhting else ready to go,I want to fire it up,if I take the time to come by.
