9-1/4 in my 73 Satelitte wagon?? - 10/03/10 02:17 AM

I bought my 1973 Satelitte wagon just last week.
It has a late build of June 1973.
58,000 miles and bought from second owner who hardly driven it.
On a couple other forums, people are surprised to see the 9-1/4 under there.
My 1973 FSM does not show the big axle in there at all.
I thought I could pick a few experts' brains for any information.
Is it possible a late build got this axle?
Did 1974 models get this axle?
BTW,she is a 318 with a three speed column shifted manual transmission. The u-joints are the big yoke type.
No power steering, factory radio delete car.
If anybody has any info that may help,I thank them in advance.
Also, where would I find the build sheet in a wagon??
I had many Mopars, but this is my very first wagon.

It was introduced in 73 for HD, police and trucks. Possible a unmarked HD police wagon?

Are you sure it's a 9-1/4. Looks more like a 8-1/4 to me.

The first and second owners were neighbours.
Original owner worked at a Chrysler dealership and used it only during the summer months for traveling to the cottage. It was garaged during winter months.
The second owner bought the car from the original owner in 1997 and hardly used it.Yet he kept the car well maintained.
The lack of power steering and the three-on-the-tree was too much for city driving as he got older..
Here's a pic of him and I.He will be 80 his next birthday.

I had others question this as well.
That's why I am asking here in this thread.
Yes,it is a 9-1/4.
It does not appear to have been replaced.
The car is a time capsule. It still has old H78-14 bias ply tires on it when i bought it.
But has anybody heard of this axle being used in 73 models???
I am starting to believe this wagon is a unique beast.

This car is weird, yet very cool.
3 speed manual on the column.
No power steering,no radio,no clock,no nothing.
But has power disc brakes.
The 9-1/4 axle deal is just part of the mystery of this almost no options wagon.

Would the fender tag be any help?

Re: 9-1/4 in my 73 Satelitte wagon?? - 10/03/10 03:39 AM

I believe 73 was the first year for the 9 1/4 so it isn't that crazy, especially for a wagon as they seem to usually get the more HD stuff. Still it's a bit odd to have behind a 318 3 speed.

I believe there is an axle code on the fender tag but I don't know the numbers myself...

I think some of the Chargers/RR's that year had 9 1/4's.

Likely this car was built to tow stuff. I like it, neat car.

remember 9 1/4's have that diamond shape. 8 1/4s are round, or somewhat oval.

Makes since it would have a big axle. It isn't to unusual to have a big axle like that...my slant six '72 Satellite Custom had an 8 3/4 in it. Didn't need it, but still had it! Maybe because its a manual transmission car?

Years ago I pulled a cast crank 440 out of a '74 Town and Country station wagon. It had a 9-1/4 axle. At first, I thought I hit the jackpot with a Dana 60. Probably should have pulled the 9-1/4 and kept it around to either sell or to put under my truck.

Thanks for everybody's post.
I was just curious and wanted to settle a few "disputes". LOL

Looks like it is no big deal.
I figured the wagon did some towing in the past.
I did some digging and found a factory towing wire harness behind the licince plate, and the towing relay was in the glove box.

My 73 Newport had a 9.25 in it so it was available. No telling what you will find under some cars. My dad bought a 69 Belvedere new in 69 with a 318 and it came with a 7 1/4. I would have thought it should have had an 8 3/4.
