Voltage regulator question???? Cause a miss??? - 08/19/10 02:25 AM

I installed my new Pertronix Flame Thrower distributor with the Ignitor III and it has a bad hesitation off idle. I am thinking that it is caused by low voltage??? When the car is at idle it is showing very low voltage on the gauge and as soon as I get the rpms up the voltage goes up. It has the original voltage regulator from the poits ignition with the ballast resistor. I have this newer regulator but I am not sure how to hook it up. I tried to just disconnect it and hook up the old wires to the newer one but it wouldn't run.

The newer solid state one shown in your picture requires your alternator to be the ungrounded or "dual field" so you need to modify your alternator or you can get a solid state style for the single field style alternator. Check the tech archives for wiring drawings

Ok. I think I am in luck then because I put a new alternator on it when I built the motor. It has 2 terminals on it. I had to run one of them to ground to get it to charge. Any ideas how to wire it to the newer regulator?

Go to the tech archives under electrical topics and look at the electronic voltage regulator sam

run the blue "ign" wire to the "top" terminal of the flat reg and T off of this blue wire and run it to the alt field terminal in use. "unground" the other field terminal and run it to the "side" (right side actually) terminal only (no T) on the flat reg. The "top" and "side" positions are with the triangle facing up like a pyramid.

Ok...so I finally got a chance to work on my car today. I wired it just like you guys said and what I found in the archives. It runs now...but it is not charging. Any ideas???

You ran switched 12V to one (either one)of the alt field terminals and are T'ing in this wire over to the top terminal of the reg. A seperate wire from the side VR terminal to the other alt field terminal? VR has a good ground? No go; w key "on" check for voltage at each of these connections and each one should have fire. VR may be bad. Also check the brushes and holders in the alt. holler back.

I will have to check to see if both field terminals have power with the key on. VR may be bad. I have had it sitting around for a couple years.

you will have a voltage drop across the field terminals from their windings/resistance when you check the voltage at the field terminal that goes out to the "side" reg terminal but w you having zero output you have an "open" somewhere that will be easy to find w a VOM
