A 500 trany strong enough for a D100 pickup? - 08/04/10 12:37 PM

Got a chance to buy an RH42 trans for cheap and thinking of putting it in my pickup with a mild 360 engine. What do you guys think?

been running one for 5 years now, 4 years behind a mild 360 (headers, comp XE262, eddie RPM air gap intake and eddie 600), and now behind a similar HP mag headed 318. only problem I had was 4 years behind the 360 I discovered a crack in my high stall (MP166k) lockup converter hub.

Yes, but use the right parts. Get what you need from SMR Trans. Mine in my D100 has been awesome and I have been beating the heck out of it in the 1/8th lately.

I want to switch to a non-lockup convertor, so lmk if that's what your going towards.

dragula, how did you handle to wiring of your OD? i am getting ready to put a 500 in my 77. i am thinking two pressure switches on the OD and lockup engagements with a vacuum cut-off switch to kill OD for passing. any part numbers or applications of the stuff you used? thanks, jp in the land of oz.

Well , I don't know much about The A500 as opposed to the 518. The trany I'm getting is labeled "Goverment type" I wonder what that means? Supposedly completely rebuilt and never used.

There are a couple of things needed to make these really live in ANY aplication. The OD sections work off reduced shift pressure, this is bad. Also, there is a larger clutch pack available, and the VB needs to be modded a little.

All in all, it works awesome. It barks 2nd gear every time and I have shifted to OD at full throttle at 6000rpm numerous times with no slippage or any issues.

Make sure you get the right parts from SMR, otherwise you will be pulling it when it quits. There's a lot of little details to get correct and its not worth doing it twice.

As for the OD, mine is done off of a floor mount dimmer switch. No vacuum switches or anything like that. When I street drive it, I usually just leave it on all the time. When it shifts into 3rd, it will then again short shift to OD after gaining another 500rpm or so. It basically drives like a regular car when I leave the switch on. For passing gear, you do need to kick it out of OD though.

I run only ATF +4 in it, same as my last diesel and that trans lasted 10 years.

mine is ~ a 92 or so that I bought used, assuming unrebuilt. it was behind a 360 in a truck IIRC for a number of years before I got it. AFAIK it's all stock, except for the trans-go TFOD shift kit I put in it.

no idea on mileage on the tranny before I got it, but I have about 32k on it now and it's still going strong.

for OD/lockup, I'm using 2 NO pressure switches that are lockup switches in TH350 trannies, IIRC one is ~40PSI, the other 48. I'm using a GM NO vacuum switch in the hot leg, as well as a toggle switch for O/D cancel.

That's basically how I'm doing mine, other than I don't have a lock up....it's a 92 2 wire 518.

42RH is based on the 904..

rebuild one two years ago in my G/F 95 dakota..

front half is 904...with overdrive section...
