challenger 6 speed in street rod, shifter driveshaft?

challenger 6 speed in street rod, shifter driveshaft? - 07/06/10 02:35 PM

just got in a 6 speed from a new challenger. it has a funky shifter , just a rod coming out of the back of where the shifter is , it must have some remote shifter set up .
the output shaft just has a flange with 3 bolts and no slip yoke.
how the do you make it work on a street rod project?
is there any way to use a normal shifter and slip yoke?

here is a picture

You can just use a driveshaft with a slip built into it (like a 4wd front shaft type setup) Looks to be the same trans (or at least similar) to what's used in the Cadillac CTS-V and Holdens (Pontiac GTO/G8) they use the bolt on flange too..
I "think" I read somewhere or other that you could use a shifter in one of the blank off plates on the top of the trans instead of the rod type setup.

is there any way to run a normal yoke on the transmission?

great post. I was looking to buy a 6 speed for mine. can we use a different bellhousing? i think i will need to have starter on drivers side to cleat TTI headers. What is the designation of tranny. T-56 or tko ###? thanks

looks like a regular t56. a 03-04 cobra shifter should work, thats what i put on my viper t56

its the model after the t56, its a 6060. supposed to be a better version of the t56. the aftermarket ones have a different tail shaft and call it a T56 magnum.
It does look like a regular t56 shifter would bolt on but i havent taken it apart to see yet. and the only t56 shifter i have to try is in my daytona.

That's another one of those parts engineered by Merciless Bends and dropped on Chrysler.
Meet the Mercedes flex disc.

Perhaps you can nab a drive shaft and swap to a rear yoke after you cut it down.

I tried a shifter from a 98 viper T56 in the challenger trans and it would have worked but the bolt holes were off about 1 /8" length ways. i cant believe that .i set it in and could shift with it but the holes were just off. why would they do that?

Just elongate the holes

Wonder if an F body one would be any closer..I can take a pic of mine for you if it would help at all..

Found a pic from a little while ago on my project that shows it..looks like the shifter plate bolts are abit further apart than on yours. Maybe see what the Ford ones look like too?

I cant find anyone who can get the piece to attach to the flange on the ind of the transmission. everyone is telling me to get the original driveshaft and try to modify it.
does anyone know if there is something available to bolt up th the flange or will i have to track down a factory driveshaft?

Can you measure the 4-bolt plate on there? Looks like the same pattern as what comes on the TKO, could probably pop the tail off and add the internal part on to the shifter rail, and you'd be in business.

Or you could nab the stock shifter too and modify it.

It looks the same (or very similar) to a Cadillac CTS-V version, maybe grab a used driveshaft front half out of one of those for the flange setup?

If not, in doing a very fast search around, looks like changing the extension housing and output shaft to F body is what some of the GM people are doing to use that trans in 'normal' stuff

My NAG 1 transmision from an 09 challenger has the same end on it. I went to a place near me called shaft masters. The told me no problem. They would make me a custom aluminun drive shaft that was splined and slip in and out of it self a little. They would make a cnc aluminum adapter to fit on the end of the trans with a yolk for a ubolt to bolt up to the drive shaft. I asked about modifying the driveshaft that was from this trans and he said his would be much stronger. Price was about $450. I have not had it made yet since I dont have the measurement to give him yet

I wish i could find a shop to do that to mine. i ordered a challenger driveshaft yeasterday so i could try and make one from it to work.
Can you get the phone number to the shop that you were talking to about making a driveshaft? that sounds like the best way to go.
I did talk to a place about changing the tail shaft but they never got back to me on it.
i got the challenger shifter and figure i can make it work if i shorten up the rods a little it will end up in the right location for my car.
i did try the viper shifter from my other viper T56 and it would fit up and shift but i couldnt get the 2 front bolts in the shifter they were about 1/8" off

There is an awesome driveshaft shop out here too, and imagine they could do a similar one (just had a normal one built about a week and a half ago actually)

Might be worth a call at least.. Powertrain Industries. 714-893-4585

FWIW the newer mustangs (seen it on manual trans cars don't know about auto) use a flange on the transmission and a driveshaft with a slip spline in the middle. Maybe that stuff would work for you.

Re: challenger 6 speed in street rod, shifter driveshaft? - 08/20/10 04:45 AM

i called shaftmasters and they said they can make me a driveshaft witht the slip built in . it will be aluminum and have an adapter to bolt to the flange. i need to send the flange and they said it will be about $650. so i canceled my order for the factory challenger driveshaft since it has been about 2 weeks and hasnt came in yet anyway. it was going to be $380 plus the price to have a shop rework it to work in my car.

I can bring in a flange for you for measurement purposes since I'm going to have them do mine anyways, then I'll get a chance to see the finished driveshaft before they send it out to you. Let me know if you want me to do this for you.

Re: challenger 6 speed in street rod, shifter driveshaft? - 08/22/10 04:29 AM

that would be grear, it would save me shipping the flange to them. Is your flange from a 6 speed?
you might even get a better deal if you tell them you need one at the same time and they can make both parts at once on the CNC machine.
